Many thanks all for your responses. I'll probably go for the Dell as I have had a very good experience with our Studio 17 lappy I bought before chrismas. I will upgrade the ram up to 4 gig, as our laptop has 3 gig and it chugs along at a very reasonable rate. As for gaming, my lad has a networked XBox so he should be reasonably ok for high end stuff. He is in his GCSE year anyway so we are trying to get him to use the machines less often.

Thats probably because they're getting a discount! The movie industry is like the opposite of the home user market, linux out numbers macs and windows.

49% of professional editors in the US use Apple's Final Cut Pro.

I have a friend who is currently studying film-making, and there's not a PC, running Linux or otherwise, to be seen in his department, or in use by any of the lecturers or students. It's like being in some strange alternate reality where everyone uses a Mac (and no, they don't all sit around in turtlenecks sipping lattes while listening to acoustic adult contemporary).

In fact, he was told "if you buy a PC, don't bother coming to class". His brother, who was studying audio production, was told the same thing.

May we assume that the aforementioned Mr. Ballmer will not be using his power and influence to secure enrolment for his children in this enlightened academy?

They're forbidden from using Google, so it's unlikely they'd even be able to find it. :p

But would they have time to, in between posting endless HiJackThis outpourings to aliEnRIK :A on MSE in order to get their computers to work?

With what, I wonder, is Mr. B greeted when he gets home after a hard day making a fool of himself at the office? "Hi, Dad! Can you come and sort out our computers? They've got a virus and we can't do our homework. We called that nice friend of yours, Mr. Dell, and asked him what to do and he said, "Ask your damned father; he wrote the bloody software!"

One suspects that this never happens in the Jobs household.

I was mainly talking rendering clusters but you'll find that linux is behind most of the biggest movies due to its ease of customisation. Most of them use it now as primary animation and special effects OS.

Ah. That'd be why they lost the Oscar to "WALL.E", then. :D

Sorry I forgot they gave the oscar to Wall.e because they made it with Macs.

I doubt Pixar exclusively use Macs even now, having invested some much time developing software for their linux servers etc.

I think Pixar switched to using Macs for their production work around the time the dual-core Power Mac G5 came out and Apple developed Pixlet in cooperation with them.
