Billy, Id never considered a Dell before but the fact it could be delivered in a few days swung it for me and Im pleased it did as they have been really good. Id forgotten to add speakers to my spec - rang them, THEY apologised that they hadnt pointed this out and sent them on to me free 2 days later. Always very quick to sort problems - Im very pleased with them. When I read the graphs of customer satisfaction - I was surprised that Dell wasnt up higher but in fact I also read notes that Dell sold by far the highest number of computers and hence the number of complaints were in fact a smaller percentage compared with the companies selling fewer units.
Good luck and HAGGLE!!0 -
I don't think I ever said any such thing. I used to use Linux before I got a Mac, and I would happily do so again if I ever had to use a PC.
I think if I ever won the lottery I'd buy a mac and put linux on it:rotfl:I very much doubt Pixar pay the same price for Macs that the rest of us pay.
I'd hope not too!Whether it comes with better hardware is certainly debatable. I have certainly seen a lot more older Macs than I have PCs. Generally Mac owners don't view their Macs as disposable. And there's nothing on Windows that compares to iLife that I've ever seen.
I built my current PC for 400 and its got better specs that than the faster mini mac. I dont think you're looking hard enough for older PC then, generally they are free from freecycle etc but they're around, I've an 8 yr old PC running fine (Damn Small Linux) from freecycle. Whats iLife?0 -

lol...and a fine Linux box it'd make!I built my current PC for 400 and its got better specs that than the faster mini mac.
Well the Mac Mini is rather in need of an overhaul (567 days since it was last updated!), so I wouldn't advise anyone to buy one until that happens.I dont think you're looking hard enough for older PC then, generally they are free from freecycle etc but they're around, I've an 8 yr old PC running fine (Damn Small Linux) from freecycle.
How usable are they though? My 9 year old iMac runs Mac OS X 10.4 just fine.Whats iLife?
It's Apple's integrated suite of lifestyle applications which comes free with every Mac.
It's really rather good.

Can't comment on anything apart from mine but DSL is running fine, browse the internet, email, type, only thing I needed to do is put a network card in it which was also free. DSL like puppy its built for old computers.0 -
Well I guess we're both lucky we're not chained to Microsoft. My sister got a new laptop 6 months before Vista was released, and it can't run it (according to the upgrade advisor anyway). Meanwhile I had a Mac made 6 years before, and it ran the latest OS X.
People buying Windows PCs, even cheap ones, must have deeper pockets than I do.0 -

The vast majority of people who buy PCs dont know any different, I've stood in the Apple shop using the free internet you can get in there and listened to someone ask the sales guy what version of windows the macbook she was looking at ran.
Having your OS installed on practically every PC sold over the last couple of decades hasn't made windows a house hold name, its practically it mean computing. For the home user at least.0 -
Phew, for a horrible moment I thought the OP was going to end up buying a Mac. I've never seen such convincing arguments for buying one. Anyway, we're safe from viruses for a little longer. The Mac Users total hasn't reached critical mass yet. And long may it remain so. Carry on buying Dell and keep the malware to yourselves!

Or use common sense and safe browsing habits and avoid it completely!0 -
You did have some problems last year where it was rebooting every few minutes. Did you ever figure out what was causing it?
It took you two weeks to sort out a problem with your security software, rendering your computer useless in the meantime.
That's not something I'd want to repeat.
But our guy Rik is very good at sorting these things out, so I guess when you have problems again, he'll be able to help you figure it all out.
Thanks for the response Marty.
Yes I did have problems last year, but luckily a run back through system restore, and changing my virus and firewall to other providers sorted it all out eventually.
This time it seems more terminal. I have been getting blue screen of death after a couple of minutes of use. I have tried using system restore in safe mode, however none of my restore points will work. I also cant use task manager as i get the error message that 'administrator has blocked my access'. After the machine has rebooted I get the stock reply that the restore point didnt work, but the pc seems to run ok. The on reboot the next day, blue screen of death again. I am just hoping that while the machine is working temporarily I can backup my last 6 months of work.
cheers Bill0
