Definately another vote for Aldi. They have two different ones and we go for the slightly more expensive ones, in a blue bag as they have no added water. Really nice x

  • We've been buying the tesco frozen fillets. Would prefer fresh but it's always handy to have a spare in the freezer! We haven't had any problems with them. Would always try to use them in a curry or some sort of sauce as I don't think they taste quite so nice as fresh.

Had some chicken fillets from Morrissons the other - absolutely awful - full of water. Tesco's much better.

Sometimes the butchers do them cheaper than the supermarkets, and they're much better quality. I got some from the butchers counter at an Asian supermarket yesterday, the price was just under £4 per kg but I can't remember exactly how much, they were really good quality too :)
  • I always buy fresh when I see them and freeze works out super cheap this way but occasionally (not often admittedly) when I have run out I buy the Asda ones, I've had the smartprice ones but I tend to go for the next price band up, it's about £5.50 for 1kg or possibly 1.5kg. If you keep an eye out I have tried Tesco and Morrisons ones they did have a brand name and were half price at £3.50 for a kilo so it was really good value and they were tasty. The smartprice ones are good enough when using with spices, casseroles, curry etc etc. I think it's cheaper to buy a whole chicken and use up the meat in various ways though :)

  • Just a quick thought, but we've started buying fresh thigh fillets as they're half the cost of the breasts and are very tasty. Ideal for curries, stews etc. They freeze well too. Usually pay £2.50 for 500g from Mr S.

The white slime is water. Oportunistic wholesalers spin chicken fillets in something similar to a centrifuge until they absorb extra water, increasing their weight and increasing the company's profits. This is more likely to happen with value/smartprice/basics chicken breasts than with "quality" supermarket ranges. (Something similar happens with bacon.)

Only way to avoid it is to buy your chicken from a butcher, preferably one who joints his chicken himself.

Stay clear of Morrisons. Full of water and fat!
