What I do is buy a whole chicken and then joint and fillet it myself. It's quite easy once you have the right knives. The carcass you can then boil up to make stock with...I am the leading lady in the movie of my life

Definately another vote for Aldi. They have two different ones and we go for the slightly more expensive ones, in a blue bag as they have no added water. Really nice x
We get the same, they are nicer than the cheaper one as they don't have the added water and it isn't that much more to pay - still only £3.99 for a bag x0 -
Are you near an Aldis, because they do a medium whole chicken l think for around £3.85 or a large whole chicken for for £4 pound odds I have 7 mouths to feed and 1 of the large chickens feeds us very well, Maybe you could buy one and portion it out.
I have also started to buy chicken thighs as they seem to have more taste about them I went to Asda last week and came upon halal chicken thighs that seemed to be cheaper than Asdas own make l think they were about £2.47 for 8 they had loads of meat on them. I fried them off with their skins on them with a little oil, put some sea salt, pepper and chilli flakes put them in the oven for 25mins and served them with as lovely salad , they tasted a like salt and pepper chicken from chinese. It was a cheap meal and very tasty too, my kids have requested them again. chicken thighs could als be deboned and chopped into chunks for curries. l always used chicken breast portions which are costly but after watching gok wan chinese cookry show he expressed that chicken thighs had more taste so decided to try them instead and glad l did, its just amazing what you can do with cheap cuts of meat or poultry if you know how and give them a try.lts saving me a fortune.0 -
Seen Frozen Drumsticks And Thighs But Have Never Bought Value Meat Before. Thanks.
We sometimes buy a couple of whole value chickens and can get a 1.8kg for around £3. This will do us a roast dinner, round of sandwiches and chicken muck muck (left over chicken with tin of mushroom soup-supreme) and the last of the scrap meat will go to the dog.
I don't like the chicken portions as you seem to get loads of drumsticks and we prefer the lighter meat and use the darker meat of the whole chicken in the sauce. To repeat what others have said, requires education, to challenge it,requires brains!FEB GC/DIESEL £200/4 WEEKS0 -
I usually buy a 1.4-1.6kg chicken to feed 3 adults plus 2 cats. Roast it whole, cats get the meat of the wings possiblly the drumsticks if mum hasn't nabbed them. Adults eat the breast meat. Dad after eating will seperate the meat from the carcass onto two plates, good meat for us which will either have in a stirfry or curry following day and not so good scraps for the next day cats meals.
My brother lives alone so we used to get in a bag of frozen pieces for him to cook with when he wanted but the price shot up and so was cheaper to buy him a whole chicken. So a chicken can last upto 3 days depending how hungry he is.0 -
No I wouldn't.Here dead we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
And we were young.

I would. And I probably will for next weekend. If not Tesco EV, then ASDA SP. At £2.07/kg, they are excellent VFM. Tesco only do them up to 1.6kg, ASDA sometimes have them up to 2kg.
For Christmas 2007, my Mum and I thought we'd celebrate with a free range organic chicken from a local farm. It was the most tasteless chicken we've ever (not) tasted. The chicken giblet pie I made was infinitely better. Maybe we're just too used to whatever they may or may not put into the value chickens. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
I buy the frozen fillets, great for curries and casseroles, frozen pieces handy for snacks in the fridge and lunch boxes with various marinades and also tesco value whole chicken, tasty and plenty of meat on. I don't buy value fresh fillets, loads of water in them!
I understand the ethics in buying free range meat but I would rather save my money to spend on days out with the kids etc, they are only little once0
