Personally I don't give a rats if they discuss something I've said on the forum.

If they disagree with an opinion stated here then this is the best place to voice it surely?

I occasionally look at hpc "anecdotes" for a bit of a laugh, but find the discussions here more balanced.
  • Obviously not all of them, I post there for example, but there is certainly a sexist undertone to alot of threads, I think the postsers are mostly blokes so it's to be expected maybe.

On the plus side that site is the main reason I didn't get a 100%IO mortgage in 2007 at the urging of my Dad when my unfortunate step-siblings did.

I have to disagree, there are a few notable women posters who are taken as seriously as the male posters.

I cant believe you said that. Any disagreement posted here is deleted by a mod!!! You do realise how heavily censored this forum is dont you?

I am a regular on HPC.The site isnt just about a housing crash......

.........MSE is a good site in many regards but when it comes to hard economics, trends and whats really going on,and more to the point the outcomes that will happen HPC and many of the people who post on it are way ahead of any other similar site.

    Great post.

Durhamborn, you sound like you are in a very similar position to myself. Mortgage paid off while everyone was "having a party". I now couldn`t care less if my house was worth less than I payed for it. It`s priceless to me, as it keeps me warm and dry when I`m not at work. If I want to make money, I work for it, not rely on the home I live in. If I want to buy something, I save for it. Apart from a car or a home, debt should be avoided, IMO. The only time I would take on debt for any other reason would be in an emergency (if I were out of work, and had nothing to eat). Flatscreen TV ? Save for it. Holiday ? Save for it. New laptop ? Save for it. Simple, eh ?

I sound like a "HPC nutter", because I am one.
30 Year Challenge : To be 30 years older. Equity : Don't know, don't care much. Savings : That's asking for ridicule.
  • Also a regular on HPC here - just wanted to say that i think the work MSE people do is often fantastic for those who need help and support.

I read MSE occasionally but on a personal level I am often left upset for and baffled by people who have spent so unbelievably above and beyond their means. I have friends in similar positions who have gone bankrupt, have huge debts, lost jobs etc. but so often people wait until the situation becomes beyond control before they apply some basic common sense to their money management.

I commend those who have the time and patience to listen to, advise and support those who have failed to manage their income/debts/mortgages etc. on the scales often seen here.

As an internet forum reader for all sites on these topics ie. MSE, HPC & the old Singing Pig etc. I have always found HPC to be the most accademic of the largest forums and I can honestly say i learnt a huge amount from reading it. Yes, there an aggressive and intolerant element that has developed on HPC since i joined it in 2005 (and yes a crash was obvious from back then) but I believe that is the minority and that posts blatently picking on individuals posting on MSE or SP or other forum in the hope of seeking support is wrong.

Ultimately each of our forums serves different purpose. And right now a lot of people out there need all the help/information/support they can get... and i think we all recognise that is only going to increase for the forseeable future.

EDIT: Just to add i find that DrB's site GEI is the best board for economics and investment discussion right now and would encourage sensible contributions to the debates.

The DFW board is an excellent tool for sorting out your debt problems, there is some excellent advice and guidance. OK, so it might be all hugs etc but the support offered is great.

HPC is a place full of nutters.

So ok,people who need to visit a debt board are Mensa members but HPC members are nutters?

I sold a BTL within two months of the top,it had trebled in price. The money went into Euros,Yen and some stirling. The house will half in price i sold, next door is up with no takers -37%.My euros and Yen are up 34% in sterling terms.
Debt zero.Home 100% owned.Starting next week the currency will be going into Asian stocks and FTSE trackers. They will put on at least 20% before houses turn.(relative).Markets always rise first, houses are a lagging indicator.

Houses will fall until in real terms they are down at least 40%,in sterling terms probably closer to 60%.

Il sell the foreign denominated investments at the first sniff of inflation and buy probably 2 BTLs cash. Then rent them out to people at a probable 15% yield who cant buy because their credit score is shot to pieces.

Then when propert !!!!!! appears on tv again il sell them and do it all again.

    I know,im a nutter:rotfl:

The fact is many many people with no understanding of economics were lending huge sums.Indeed most of the problems are not from people buying a home. Its the people who then MEWed the equity to buy cars, holidays etc..

Many people MEWed to build extensions & loft conversions. MSEers have enough understanding of money to know that there is nothing wrong with that.

Edit I never did understand the problem with MEWing to add to the value of a house?
  • Does Injin post on here as well as HPC? I feel it is only fair that you lot, or should I say, us lot ;), have to put up with "it" too.

My husband got me on to HPC in 2004. I remember I used to read it religiously every day, it was exciting because back then, it was the only place I could find on the web that agreed with my sentiments. Now I'm bored of it. The decent posters have left, and, like Laughing_man, I agree with it having an offensively sexist undertone, which is why I have never really bothered posting. I also find the general opinions way more overly aggresive than seems natural, unlike here. I enjoy the local housing thread, in relation to my location and the posters there, in particular are insightful and respectful and that's why I pop back once a week or so. I learnt a lot from it initially, but MSE seems a little more balanced and laid back. Husband is a regular poster on the fool, but I can't seem to get into it.
