    Hi Johnny,
Fair enough, I'm not a regular on the debt-free board.
I don't disagree with RichC's sentiments, but I can see why his posts have been removed.

Perhaps you could consider the following regarding this case:
    1. The Debt-Free board is designed to help people out of debt. Not pass judgement on how they got there. "Mutual Support and Help".
    2. The OP was obviously in quite a state.
    3. RichC's comments, whilst possibly valid, don't help her at all. The only thing it may do is make her feel worse. Not the nicest thing to do to someone asking for help.

You've probably got loads more examples and I'm not going to try to justify them all as I'm not the moderator, but as I said, I haven't ever had a post deleted. Posts considered offensive do get removed though.

Nobody should borrow too much money. But sometimes it's cheaper to extend your house than move, so as long as you can afford it where's the harm?

Fine. Just dont come here asking for (((((((((((((((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) because your mother is going to have her gold teeth pulled out by NR to pay for it.

  • Well, I admit it ... I swing both ways!

BUT if you are asking me where I'd rather have been back in 2004/5 - it was with the bigoted gob!!!!!s (Big hug for the boys!!!!!)

Yes they are extreme, yes they can be bigots, yes, some can be cruel to people who have over spent, but I try to weigh this against the fact that since the early 2000's, they were the same people who resisted the pressure of their peers not to 'miss the boat,' and were ridiculed and derided for not joining in the party.

Everybody sort of found one another, and although there were many differences, I think we were pleased to find a haven that supported what we believed as individuals and proved to us, with reasoned (perhaps not the right word) discussion, that we were not going insane.

Some, not many, as you say are being rotten to folks who have now ended up in the mire - but on reading their posts even I am surprised to see that many have been supportive:eek:

Each board now has a purpose, although maybe HPC isn't as clearly defined as it once was. But even though I've had some stinky arguments on there and been called a dog to a !!!!! (and had the fun of being allowed to post some of my own OTT insults back) I'll not forget how they stopped me going completely bonkers when I was sure it was the world that was mad and not me!

Just for the record I put DO NOT POST IN FORUMS on my wall this morning because it takes up too much time ... that didn't last long.

... and Dan, you never know when your situation may change and you will be forced to leave a house, so MEWing at the top of a market is never a good idea for whatever reason.

Presumbly one would intend to stay in the house for a while if investing in an extension or something, so NE is not really an issue.

Or maybe you should only buy a loft extension when you can actually afford to pay for it?

I know its something of a novel idea, actually buying something when you can afford it, rather than getting into masses of debt. You should try it some time.

    Oh heck Dan!

I think the difference in mindsets between HPC and MSE is summed up in this one statement ...

the people at HPC are not gloating about the problems of people on MSE - they are extremely angry about it.

its the people who have been reckless with their massive borrowing that drove up house prices to create the bubble and are now bringing down the economy for everyone now that they are struggling to pay it back.

if it was a case that someone lost their job and are struggling to pay back a 5k loan then there wouldnt be an issue. its when they see people saying they have racked up 50k on credit cards that gets people incensed.

the difference with HPC is that HPC is not about advice but is a discussion forum, and as a result the general public are expressing their extreme anger about the people that have been reckless .

  • Sorry Setmefree, but I think your point is going way over my head!

Either you are saying HPC'ers wanted property to crash - which they did because there was (now proven) a property bubble

or you are saying that property prices aren't crashing? In which case I think you are wrong.

But maybe you would like to enlighten me if I'm missing the point - because I'm dashing about and a bit tired ...!

Why? Most people who build extentions & loft conversions have kids. Kids have the habit of growing up. An extension & a loft conversion are not much use to you when your kids have left home. If the choice is between moving house to accomodate your growing family or extending, it's often cheaper to extend. I think I read somewhere that going from a 3 bedroom house to a 4 bedroom house averagly costs £100,000 - extensions don't cost anywhere near that.
