All broadcast HD is 1080i, not 720p.
seems your right ~
"On Sky, ALL HD material is broadcast at 1080i regardless of the original format it was filmed in, and all SD material is broadcast at 576i.
The i is very important because it indicates that the material is all in interlaced format. To be shown correctly on a digital display this needs to be deinterlaced to progressive format.
If you set the box to Auto, it outputs 1080i for HD and 576P for SD.
If you set the box to 720P it outputs 720P for both SD and HD
If you set the box to 1080i it outputs 1080i for both SD and HD.
There is no doubt that the scaler in the box is pants but the deinterlacer is far, far worse! Typically this means that the least compromised output (even on 720-768 line displays) is to output 1080i for all material. This means a double scaling but avoids the introduction of deinterlacing artefacts which no display could get rid of.":idea:0 -
Further to the quote above.
It does in fact mean that a SKY+ box using a scart cable will look better displaying SD content then the HD box would using a hdmi displaying the same SD (If the tvs worth its salt)
Thats just WRONG!
So 1080i is probably the best overall setting you can get for SKY HD
I certainly wont be bothering with it until they sort that out.........:idea:0 -

Sky Sports HD walks all over the standard definition equivalent. No contest.0 -

just been watching natures great events. i flicked between bbc1 and bbc hd and i couldnt see any difference. i am beginning to think hd is a con. in fact i think since changing to hd the sd picture has gotten worse while hd is pretty much the same as what the sd picture used to be like on our previous box.
anyone who thinks sky hd is better is suffering from a placebo affect. we have only had it since yesterday but so far not too impressed. i am hoping i will change my mind.0 -
not all programmes on the HD channels are necessarily broadcast in HD, I have found. Sorry if this has already been mentioned. But yes Sky Sports HD is awesome. A million billion times better than ITV footy coverage, that's for sure.0

What screen size do you have? I'm told that with less than 32in TV's, HD is not really noticeably different. Also is it 720p or 1080i res? Sky HD broadcasts are at 1080i, so if you only have 720p res you are not getting the full potential of the broadcast. (Standard def is 576 for comparison-so 720 HD is only a small step up).
PS: If you do have a 1080i HD TV, check that the Sky HD box is set to 1080 and not to the lower 720 res.
our hd box can be set to either 576p, 720p, 1080i or automatic. 1080p is actually full hd which it seems is only available with blu ray or certain games consoles. we currently have ours set to 1080i but as sd programmes seem to be worse than before i suspect that everytime i put a sd programme on i might need to change the setting to 576p.0 -

As I quoted above. It will more than likely look its best set at 1080i as setting to 576P means the box is 'deinterlacing' (Making it progressive), which its terrible at doing. If it stayed at 576i then your tv would do the converting and upscaling and probably look far better (But it cant)
Still, try all modes to see which you find best but going off what ive found id say 1080i is the way to go for everything (even though its worse than watching NORMAL sky+ through a scart lead!):idea:0 -

I have had BBC HD on Freesat for a couple of months now. I watched The Green Green Grass this afternoon and the definition was absolutely amazing (not on the old bits of Fools and Horses that kept appearing !). One man was wearing a Tweed style jacket and you could literally count the threads in the coat !
I did see part of Natures Great Events (having seen it previously) and the quality on that was not quite as good as Green Green Grass, but was still very good - FAR superior to SD. I really think that if anyone is saying that they can't see any difference between SD & HD:-
1. They need to see an optician - soon !
2. They are sitting much too far away from the TV
3. They have got something set up/connected incorrectly and their TV is not seeing or displaying HD.
I have just signed up for Sky HD so if it isn't as good as BBC HD (as a generalisation, since programmes do vary) I shall be upset and have things to say ! Will let you know after 2 March.
Certainly, on what I have seen on Freesat to date, I have to say HD is absolutely stunning.0 -

my thinking regardng setting it to 576 for sd has come from discussions about upscaling dvd players. people have often said that some dvds look worse when they are upscaled. so i figured if the hd box is upscaling a sd picture and it doesnt look very good then maybe setting it to 576 would leave the tv show as it is. i particularly noticed a poor picture when i put uk gold on while a episode of last of the summer wine was on. i noticed the difference between now and what it was last week when i saw an episode of this series on our old box.0
