Like I said Donna. By all means try it out.
If possible (And ive no clue on this without having a go myself), it might be that you can fit a scart cable to your HDbox and watch in normal 576i through scart and HD through the hdmi?
Certainly worth a try methinks:idea:0 -

I watched The Green Green Grass this afternoon and the definition was absolutely amazing (not on the old bits of Fools and Horses that kept appearing !). One man was wearing a Tweed style jacket and you could literally count the threads in the coat !
i watched this show on our old box on friday and then saw some of it on bbc hd today. would agree that the picture seemed to be better but on the fools and horses flashbacks the picture was worse than when i watched it on friday.
so far i think faces seem to look more defined but everything else seems pretty much the same as before.0 -
i do wonder about the quality of the hd cable coz i have other things with hd cables and they seem to look better. i was also suspicious about whether our box was new because the edge of the box looked a little tatty and the optical output slot doesnt work.0

Id get that replaced purely on the fact the optical doesnt work (Meaning your missing out on 5.1 sound):idea:0 -
I guess I need to check that on the sky box?
I looked into this yesterday.
It seems SKY HD boxes dont look as good dislaying SD as normal sky + boxes (Which is COMPLETELY wrong to my mind)
It will probably be at its best displaying 1080i.
However, if you can connect a scart that displays 576i (NOT p), then that would almost certainly be a better picure (And use HDMI for HD content). Wether or not the box will run with both ive yet to find out.:idea:0 -

as we didnt want to go through the hassle of phoning them and then waiting for another bloke to come. we solved the issue by getting a converter to convert coaxial to optical. as we do already have both a optical cable and a coaxial cable. so we now get 5.1 by connecting the coaxial to the hd box and then to the converter. we then connect the optical cable to the converter and also to the home cinema system. we only had to go through all that because the home cinema system only has optical in and no coaxial in.0 -

You do realise that by running through a convertor, youll lose some quality?
Id personally get a relacement box:idea:0 -
Donna ~ Am I also right in thinking that youve BOUGHT a SKY HD box? Surely if thats the case then its should be in as 'as new' state (And youd get more for it as and when you come to sell it if the day ever comes)
Entirely upto you of course but the more people let sky get away with this the more theyll continue to do it...........:idea:0 -
i agree its just do i really want to spend who knows how long on the phone and then take another day off and be sat there waiting around just for the sake of a optical out slot being faulty. i may change my mind but at the moment i cant be bothered. if they call or email us asking what we think then i will tell them for sure.
i can tell what is wrong with it. the cable doesnt have a snug enough fit in the slot. it feels slightly slack. the dolby digital light flashes on and off on the panel of the home cinema system and there is no sound coming through the home cinema. it is of course working the way we have it set up now.0
