Accident in a retail store

Well said mihkanorman, risk assesements should be carried out and part of the assesment should take into account that if it is in a childrens department that children can be adventurous etc.
The law states that businesses should provide a safe environment for their employees and the public. As you are not claiming any money I would expect the shop will be pleased with your feed back as it could help prevent a more serious accident and could save them money.
People MSE is to help other people not to pass judgement on other people it is here for people to help other people. This is lost on some people on MSE who cannot grasp the concept of using your knowledge to benefit other people. If you want to pass judgement of other people there are places you can go where you will be with like minded people. Perhsaps the letters page of the Daily Mail would be more appropriate for you....0 -
Thank you dacouch & mishkanorman that is exactly the information I was trying to obtain and thought this was the site that I would get it from. I was shocked and disappointed by how quickly I was attacked by others. What a waste of their time!
I completely agree that children should not be allowed to run around shops and this instance she was with an adult and was not running off but simply stood at the side of them and bent down to look closer at Fifi and the flowertots. I do not think of myself as a perfect parent as I don't believe there is such a thing, however I am far from being a bad parent.0 -
My 2 year old daughter was in instore tonight and bent over to look at some Fifi wellingtons. The metal rod that they were hanging on stabbed her in the face missing her eye by cms. She started to cry and when they looked the end of the rod was not covered by any rubber tip or flattened into a circle or anything. She is ok but has a lump and a bruise coming. Does anyone know if these rods should have protective ends on them? We are so lucky that it missed her eye!

Oh how shocking - someone posts on MSE and gets slated.
OP - i have 3 ankle munchers who i do observe at all times - but i would also be a bit miffed that a display of fifi wellies which are aimed at small people could injure them.
The shop needs to know the problem so they can rectify it.It's not paranoia if they really are after you.0 -

I think you should bring it to their attention and suggest (nicely) that they consider rubber tips. TBH though I do think that it was the responsibility of the adult she was with,, to look after her and ensure that she didn't get hurt by the sales hanger things - shops aren't childproofed, I don't think they're obliged to put rubber tips on (people generally don't put their faces that close to the sales pegs, IYSWIM) but bringing it to their attention nicely with a sufggestion of putting rubber tips on, shouldn't do any harm - so long as you do it nicely. If my typing is pants or I seem partcuarly blunt, please excuse me, it physically hurts to type. :wall: If I seem a bit random and don't make a lot of sense, it may have something to do with the voice recognition software that I'm using!0

Sorry but this is wrong. The OP's daughter is not a "brat". This is insulting.
In my experience not many 2 year olds are "brats". The OP has demonstrated enormous restraint, has already said that this is not a compensation issue and yet her daughter gets called a "brat"? On what basis?
Nobody is suggesting that accidents do not happen. But it seems clear that there is something the shop can do here to prevent a further injury.
Or is anyone suggesting that putting a bit of rubber on the end of the fixture is a bridge too far? If so, the credit crunch must be hitting harder than I thought.0 -
Oh, and I am not sure there can be any criticism of the OP for failing to supervise. If there was a notice saying "No children", then fine. But the OP and family were able to visit the store and expect to be safe.
If there is something which could be improved, the OP is entirely right to point this out. Can't believe there is even a debate about this.0
