I think some people here need to get a grip. The chickens are on special, and it's been mentioned a few times that they carry the Red Tractor mark (which on a few of the TV programs was the standard being called for).
From the Red Tractor website
http://www.redtractor.org.uk/site/REDT/Templates/GeneralStandards.aspx?pageid=28
It's not quite battery farming is it?Farmers are required to care for their poultry by following the Five Freedoms Welfare propositions. This means that farmers must ensure that all birds have ready access to fresh water and receive a daily diet that is nutritionally beneficial and maintains health and vigour. They must also ensure that there is sufficient space to allow all birds to feed at the same time. Animal feed must be obtained from sources that meet the strict criteria and must have been stored and transported in ways which ensure that it is free from contamination.
Farmers must ensure that birds do not suffer discomfort and are provided with an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area. The ACP standards require that poultry must have sufficient space, good quality housing and be kept in an environment that is safe, hygienic and comfortable.
Farmers must ensure that birds are free from pain, injury and disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment. Staff responsible for caring for poultry are trained to be able to recognise signs of injury, pain and disease and walk through each poultry unit regularly each day to check all birds for signs of distress. In addition, each farmer is required to engage the services of a veterinary surgeon to undertake visits to check upon the health of the birds.
Farmers must ensure that birds have the freedom to express normal behaviour by providing sufficient space to walk, turn, sit, preen flap/stretch their wings and dust bathe.
Farmers must ensure that birds have freedom from fear and distress by providing conditions and treatment that avoid mental suffering.

As they have had their heads chopped off and wrapped in plastic?
I normally buy the standard cheap chicken, but the £2 ones are very red, so we avoided them.0 -
Good Lord,
How is it a thread about cheap chickens can become a slagging match. Seriously for those of you that care about the welfare of chickens the solution is simple, don't buy them.
But please please please, allow other people to make there own mind up, its about freedom of choice and frankly some people don't care.
I worked for 6 months in a chicken factory and trust me when i say the so called "free range" chickens don't have things "much" better than the barn bred chicken, besides at the end of the day both birds are killed using the EXACT SAME methods the free range chickens don't get an easy death.. ive heard enough chickens screaming to know that they know fear and they know pain and regardless of which type they woere they both suffered... it put me right off eating chicken for years.
Personally that 6 months taught me on thing, both chickens suffer, so really buying free range does't give the chickens a "happier life" there is only SO happy a chicken can be when all it can smell is death (BOY does it smell), so i figure i have a choice, vegatarian or meat eater ... because having seen the conditions 1st hand, buying freerange does nothing to satisfy any guilt i might have, sure it got some room to move but where they happy chickens i doubt it.
Anyway... i bought 4 £2 chickens today ... good find, thanks for the tip :T0 -

Cheap chicken does contain chemicals! Lots of it in some cases, as Heston’s research showed with some chicken containing 40% water.
What are those chemicals doing to your body?I want to be credit card and loan free by Christmas 20100 -

Er - when you say "chemicals" do you mean additives like preservatives and antioxidants?
I mean yes - water is a "chemical", and I suppose it's also an "additive", but I don't think it could be considered harmful - we ourselves are supposedly around 60% water! My moobs definitely contain more than 40%!
As for other additives, I'm sure there is a strong case for suggesting they cause allergic reactions and immune system issues in some, but without them food would spoil and there would be a huge increase in both wasted product and salmonella, so I see them as the lesser of two (or perhaps three) evils.
This looks like a good deal - I'm going to try and get one today (I think going out and buying three just because that's the limit is a bit silly - don't panic, there will be other offers!).
