My favourites are Adblock, Smart Bookmarks Bar and Favicon picker on a regular basis, and I have a few others now, as a result of this thread.FreheitOverture wrote: »Because we have to make site's degrade gracefully. ...and as a noscript user...if I can't just use a site..I do question whether I need to. Many sites don't pass this test, but, on the bright side, any advertising revenue they were hoping for from me would be lost anyway due to adblock plus (which I do have turned off for a select few sites!)Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
Theres a lot of good suggestions here, if people find it useful I can edit the first post to include all the suggestions with a little description so people dont have to scroll all the way through the thread???0

I did say 'if' . There are some things that can only be done with Javascript, like navigable Google Maps which I use on a few sites, because its requested.0 -

I actually hate everyone that uses NoScript. Makes web development much less fun as I have to cater for all you paranoid people. I have never once been hit by a malicious Javascript attack.
Of course, if there's an equally good site available that doesn't require javascript to work properly, of course I'll use that site.
I know you've given another example but you can make menus that open up using CSS. Or whatever it is that TMobile's website uses:
https://www.t-mobile.co.uk/
If you float your mouse over the top menu items, they open up submenus. That's not javascript cos I haven't added TMobile to my whitelist.
What does javascript add anyway? Other than getting round adblockers... I mean, things that are useful for the visitor?
Barclays online banking doesn't require javascript to be enabled. But if it is enabled I don't have to tab from the first box to the second box when entering my number from the card reader. I can live with that... Does javascript do anything more useful than this?0 -

1. AJAX - dynamic communication with web servers without having to refresh the page. You know when you type into search forms on some web sites it auto-completes? On some sites when you register it can check if your chosen user name is already taken without having to refresh the page. That sort of thing. Google Mail, Google maps and other Google services use AJAX heavily and probably popularised it.
2. Browser version detection and bug correction.
3. Form validation prior to submission
4. Most simple online calculators.
5. Integrating browser plug-ins with web pages.
6. Animation
7. Live manipulation of the DOM - required for e.g. online email editors.
8 MSE's post editor....alright I'm getting stuck now. Was trying to get to 10.
