I did try NoScript, but it was a big pain in the !!!!, so I ended up getting rid of it.

I use Adblock Plus, Firefox PDF plugin for Mac OS X which allows Firefox to handle PDF files the same way Safari does, Fission, which puts the progress bar in the address bar (again, like Safari), and Look Up In Dictionary, which allows you to use Mac OS X's built in dictionary from Firefox.

I prefer YesScript which does the opposite. It allows you to blacklist specific sites that abuse JavaScript rather than blocking everything by default.

Other than those that have been mentioned, BugMeNot is growing on me. It gives you a login for sites that require registration so you can just click straight through.

Am I missing the point...you allow sites to run potentially malicious code and then stop them from doing it again?
what about all the code running in the background - google analytics etc...does that just get allowed by default?

Nope, I use it for a different purpose. I use YesScript to stop sites or specific pages I go to regularly doing annoying things e.g. float over adverts etc. It's nothing to do with malicious code, it's to do with annoying code.

I've only ever been hit by malicious JavaScript once and that was my fault for using an old version of Firefox on a machine I don't use regularly (and even then I'm not absolutely sure it was the JavaScript, could have been something else). So many sites rely on it for legitimate purposes, I find it annoying to have it switched off by default. I'm sure people have their own horror stories, but I don't really see JavaScript as that much of a problem generally if you keep Firefox bang up to date. Never had a problem on my regular machine(s).

As well as a couple already mentioned ..

    Dephormation ...
The Dephormation Add On ensures that your decision to permanently 'opt out' of Phorm profiling cannot be undone in Firefox. It reinstates your opt out cookie with every page load, and randomises your UID. Even if you delete all cookies regularly.
Optionally, the Add On can also alert you to sites using Phorm/ Webwise/ OIX profile based advertising.
