Hi Steerpike - 1st of all, commiserations on the arthritis - I too had full blown sudden onset 14 months ago and was completely immibilised, so I appreciated the trauma of this. Fortunately I had to avoid steroids as they clash with another condition I have, but the meds I do take make me feel pretty carp at times. I'm sure others will come in soon with their ideas to help.
I personally swear by slimming world and within that frame work am eating higher potein, lower carb as I love meat and it works well for me. I have also just started a beginners pilates class to help with my range of movement and try and tone up a bit.
We do have some members who have been on xenical (EDIT: just read vixstar - perhaps I am wrong...)and I hope they are around this weekend to offer help.
Well done for picking your self up and motivating yourself to do something about your health as it is now. We have various members with differnt health issues so we know what itis like and can offer good support. The more you post the more support we can offer.

dmv - great result re fitting into more of your clothes.
Victory - cake course sounds a great idea. And there is lways your local ad ed centre who might do 'taster' days.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

My doctor advised me initially to go on a low carb diet but, as I'm not a big meat/eggs fan, I found it very difficult to stick to.

Doctor has now prescribed Xenical for me - with instructions to eat a very low fat diet.

Has anyone else been successful losing weight with this drug? Any tips would be appreciated

I have never used it personally but I know someone that did and you really do need to eat a very low fat diet as if you "cheat" it and have a takeaway you wont be able to control your bowel movements and could have accidents for about 24 hours! Just read that if you do stick to a low fat diet that you can lose double what you would by taking the pills than you would on the diet without them so they are good in that sense, but they cant be cheated and the idea is that to keep the weight off after you will need to stick to a v low fat diet as you're body then wont be used to have very much fat (the pills are fat blockers).

    Good luck!

I'm on xenical :) Have been for quite a few months now.

I'll be honest with you, I don't think they make you loose much weight, my doctor agrees, they are more of an incentive to choose healthier/lower fat options - which then results in weight loss.

I don't ever fart unless I'm on a toilet (OH is happy with that haha) because you MAY follow through, depending on what you have eaten the past day or so. They can give you stomach cramps, and an urgent need for the toilet to begin with, but learn to recognize the warning signs.

Also, the fat DOES stain the toilet so I reccomend keeping a bottle of flash spray or something similar beside the loo, and after you've been, just spray it on the spag bol stains :D

    Hi all!

Thanks for popping in Efrieze! Hope you're enjoying your pregnancy and I bet DD is looking forward to her little sister! There are a few of us hardcore ones still around on the thread and some great new peeps too! :D Look forward to hearing from you again in due course :)

Steerpike good luck with your weight loss. There are lots of people on here losing/maintaining weight under all sorts of challenging medical conditions - they are a real inspiration :)

The weather is better here today and the work I've been having done in the house has finished (for the time being) so we can get out and about again! :D I also can't wait to get back to doing my longer-distance activities (not that I'm wishing the last of the school hols away 'cos I love having the time with DS too) :)

;) Thank you all so much for your helpful comments and support.

Ten years ago I lost several stones on the SW green plan ...is this the sort of diet that I should be looking at?

I home prepare/cook most of our food using basic ingredients as we live in the middle of nowhere so I avoid the tempting takeaways..but I am finding the low fat concept a bit difficult to understand - is this all fat regardless whether it is saturated or unsaturated? Or are you allowed good fats like olive oil or avocadoes?

    Oops my mistake about Xenical.

Mushroom burgers were lovely, although I'm sure I could make them myself. I had two burger baps as I would've last year and I think it was too much. If I have them again I think I'll have one and salad. More MSE that way too!

I think it is sat fat you need to be avoiding more. Good fats, like avocado & oily fish are essential for your body. Cooking with fat probably needs to be drastically cut. You could try a oilive oil spray instead which is about 1 cal per squirt.
As for whether sw is 'the sort of diet you should be looking at' - it is an individual choice - we have members here who are just following portion control and healthier food choices and aiming for a balance, others swear by ww or rosemary conley or sw. You need to think about what is sustinble for you an your lifestyle (and if you cook for a family, integrating it into family meals if possible). I love sw becasue I find some level of rules helps me keep focussed. Also planning meals in advance helps keep me on track and saves time and energy and money.

It may be worth googling xenical and any advice out there too. The trouble is with low fat product, they have often increased the sugar to compensate: it's all about choosing what suits you I think. Some people may choose to sub butter for say, flora, but like all such spreads, it is highly processed food and I don't particularly want to put that in my body. Others here find using a low fat spread suits their taste and life style.(I'm sounding incredibly virtuous:D, believe me, I have my weak spots too. Could eat cheese for england)

Perhaps you could post an average days food and we could offer practical suggestions. One good one for portion control is buy a smaller plate for your self.
