And then I dont get a letter that was sent to me?

How can I berate the sender when Royal Mail wont tell me who sent me it?

Thats something else that bothers me about it. They will not read me the back of the letter even if it does have an address on it. So I dont even have the option of asking the sender to pay.

The reason why they dont go straight back to the sender is that the sender can then just add the 6p or however much it is.....where if the go for the recipient, they can charge a fee. Its extortionate!

You do realise that banks were doing this for years. But penny for penny werent charging as much as Royal Mail is doing!

And really....Im not in trauma....I am debating the stupid way that Royal Mail run their business.

As I have mentioned several times.....my VENT was to do with the appalling behaviour of the guy on the phone...NOT the charges.

who did you phone, customer services or the delivery office?
the banks levied charges, you as i have said repeatedly have the option.
as you have said RM run their business.the old RM is gone.
now its all down to money. staff are bearing the brunt of cost cutting so do you think they want more staff cut to subsidise those who wont pay for the service?
  • Ah custardy - you work in the delivery office. Do you know if you can still get those cardboard devices that let you gauge the size of a letter? I know they have a more robust one in our post office but it would be a great idea if Royal Mail posted one of these to every household then everyone would be able to sort out what size letter they were sending, put the right stamps on it and pop it into their nearest postbox. Problem solved!

Actually OP, if you can get through to the Delivery Office instead of Customer Services, you usually find that the staff there are much more on the ball and helpful.
  • I'm a postie and can remember delivering information to every house about the price changes. It was also in the press.

It's really quite simple. Normal stamps for small letters. Large stamps for A4 envelopes and bulky bits like cards with badges.

Your item can be collected in person from your local delivery office at a time convnient for you. Somebody has to write your underpaid postage card out and deliver it and someone has to man the office in case you want to collect the item. Wages need to be paid for this and considering Royal Mail lose money on delivering letters, the £1 charge is justified IMO.

If you don't bother collecting your letter it will be returned to sender.

However Customer Services shouldn't have put the phone down on your OH. That's just rude

Yes, we understand that, thank you :)

What some of us are saying though is that it is not the recipient who has sent the item underpaid but it is them who the Royal Mail try to get the money from.

And so often, there is no return address.....so what happens to the letter then? It could be very important for the recipient but it is not up to them to pay.

I understand it isnt up to Royal Mail to pay either, but Royal Mail should make its practices so that the correct postage is paid every time...and if they dont do that, then they have to let the items through.

what by removing all post boxes?
all charge items are returned via the returned letters branch in belfast who sort all items with no return address as well

    I have to disagree.

If I want my letter, I dont have any choice do i? I have to pay the extortionate price!!

I dont mind paying the shortfall on the postage as that is fair and RM shouldnt lose its postage.....but I completely object to paying this fee...which is far too much......and is also not down to me to pay....its the sender who should pay.

RM are going for the easy way of obtaining money and charging people for collecting their own mail and they are relying on the fact that people dont want to 'just ignore it'.

I have 2 birthdays for 2 daughters in the house this week....it could be for them? I know one card hasnt arrived that has a postal order in it....maybe it is that? One daughter is 21 and so obviously would like all her cards.

So...not only is this inconvenient because i cant get to the PO but we dont know who sent the item, if it is the Postal order, my daughter cant get her money.....and also....if it IS actually her card and addressed to her, how can the PO charge a child for delivering it?

They should be delivered. If they are worried about shortfall of postage, as I say, they need to make the system so that everyone has to pay correct.

My OH phoned the 0845 number for customer services

so how would the national customer services be able to 'turn the letter over and read the senders details' over the phone?

FYI while a letter is in transit its the queens property if you want to get down to who belongs to
RM deliver to addresses not people so it matters not how old the recipient is.
so how would you like this new system to work?
if you dont have time to collect your item how would you post your mail.
seems many moan of the nanny state but you want uncle RM to hold yours and everyone elses hand to post a letter?
you complain about not getting your item and said these items should be returned to sender
well if you dont collect it will be IF theres some form of return address either internally or externally
otherwise RM have to pay for it to be sent to confidential waste
    all that costs money
  • A friend sent me a birthday card that was slightly larger than normal but didn't put sufficient postage on because he wasn't aware of all the changes regarding size and weight. We had a card put through our letter box 10 days after he sent it. Knew it was his birthday card but I just didn't bother going to collect it. Wasn't really being tight but didn't want to pay for my own birthday card and I would have had to make a special trip into town to collect it. So the Post Office were welcome to keep it.

Yes it does....but you are missing the point.

Why should I have to pay that?
