so you have no need to wait 48 hours
you just put that in for theatrics?
are you referring to the online fee to pay service?
Royal Mail cannot deliver my letter for 48 hours....thats what they told me. So how is it theatrics?
It doesnt matter how I pay.....online, by card or by sending off the postcard with stamps attached......thats what they told me. Minimum 48 hours.0 -
so you get loads of underpaid items
so you see why its a problem.
flats(A4) have become more and more popular
infact one reason for the pricing change was all those charities putting pens inside letters looking for donations
you will note most now use redesigned flat pens so they dont pay the higher rate
flats required different handling and different machines
seems people are only interested in what suits them as usual
im assuming this is the 1st charge item the op has had to deal with since the change in pricing
Hardly the point is it, how can the RM justify the £1 handling fee to recipients, when it is not their fault. We have gone to great lengths to advise our supporters to use the correct postage, yet still continue to be penalised.
I am not saying it is fully the RM fault for people underpaying, but in my opinion the RM did not do enough at the time to make the public aware, and almost nothing since the Large Letter introduction, why? Because they are sticking people for an extra £1!
The time spent administrating the additional £1 fee surely means it would be just as cost effective to have delivered the bloody item in the first place.0 -
right so by your logic RM just forgets about charging postage and delivers everything
its been years now since the postage changed. thats the price of things
tesco dont send me updates every day on the price of things
you are given the option to pay.
as ive said it costs money to administrate underpaid items and why should RM lose more money when (as ive said) they already lose money on most stamped mail
hence why its surely not asking much that people pay the price required?0 -

right well the card doesnt teleport
the payment has to get to the office to be checked, the item located and then put out for delivery
if you pay online then the payment notification is sent to the delivery office then as above located and put out for the next days delivery
theres no time in the early morning to sort out charge items since(rightly so) the fully paid 'live' mail is priority
however you can go to the office and collect in person.so you dont need to wait 48 hours0 -
Royal Mail freely sell me books of stamps though, to take home.
And they also provide me with a letter box over the road.
Why bother with either of these two things if they are then going to say "Tut, there isnt enough postage on this"
When people pay for things, they are given the opportunity to pay the correct price. What Royal Mail are effectively saying is "You must go to a post office to make sure you pay the right money"
Thats fine. If thats what has to be done, then ok. So why bother with the letter boxes and stamps then?
Royal Mail have a crazy system for people posting normal letters. A form, for instance, in an A4 envelope is perfectly normal, and yet Royal Mail would like to hike up the cost because they are losing money elsewhere.
I have to admit, I didnt even know a normal A4 was a higher price!!
There was nothing wrong with the system before, so why change it in the first place?
And what does it matter if it is my first undercharged letter or not? As I said, that letter is addressed to someone in my family, not the Royal Mail, and it wasnt someone here who undercharged it....so why do Royal Mail get to keep it?0 -

Years since they switched to large letter format? About 2 years, maybe 3 but that is my point, you go into the high street and I would guess 80% of people did not know that A4 (flat) means a large letter stamp.
That is my point, the RM have not been proactive enough.
With regards the pricing, yes the RM should expect people to pay for their stamps, but equally if people buy the correct stamps we should expect the RM to deliver them. How many thousands of letters were lost by the RM last year? Even when the correct postage is on, they still mess it up and then blame the sender for not getting proof of postage.
With regards underpaid items, yes I accept the RM need paying, but the recipient is the wrong person that should be fined.
Out of interest, what do you do for the RM?0 -

The other thing about going to the sorting office is that it can be very inconvenient.
Plus the fact Royal Mail are not delivering the letter they want the extra 6p for are they? lol Do I get to charge them for having to pick it up?0 -

no but you can keep your £1.06 and stay in house
yet again you get the option.
if you ever get over the trauma of this ordeal i wonder if you would berate the sender so much?0 -

i work in most areas of a delivery office
okay, turn it around.how many of those 'lost ' items are down to incomplete addresses and no return address?
the recipient gets the option of paying for the item, given most items have no return address then its easier for the recipient to get the option.
all uncollected charge items are returned via the belfast office
the change was sept 2006

the UK is not the only country to use size as a pricing factor0 -

How can I berate the sender when Royal Mail wont tell me who sent me it?
Thats something else that bothers me about it. They will not read me the back of the letter even if it does have an address on it. So I dont even have the option of asking the sender to pay.
The reason why they dont go straight back to the sender is that the sender can then just add the 6p or however much it is.....where if the go for the recipient, they can charge a fee. Its extortionate!
You do realise that banks were doing this for years. But penny for penny werent charging as much as Royal Mail is doing!
And really....Im not in trauma....I am debating the stupid way that Royal Mail run their business.
As I have mentioned several times.....my VENT was to do with the appalling behaviour of the guy on the phone...NOT the charges.0
