    2 reasons

If you load any 2 anti virus software together (norton and mcafee say) you 'could' render the computer unbootable

and of course ~ mcafee is the cr*ppest anti virus known to man (maybe not THAT bad ~ but it aint good :p)

  • ahh...why is mcafee crap then?!! Could it be that that HAS been causing the other one to keep saying I have no virtual memory?
Did the scans explain why i kept switching off...hasnt done it yet mind!! Still running first full scan...

    Mcafee is crap ~
    slows computers down
poor detection rates (MAJOR bad for an anti virus package)
    conflicts with other software
can be a nightmare to remove without the removal tool
    uses too much in resources

and yes ~ almost certainly that causing your low memory. My mates laptop died when he put mcafee on and i could NOT remove it (Though he only had 256Mb)
I ended up having to wipe the drive and start afresh

Your computer 'probably' kept switching off due to some of the infections it had/has

  • Thanks for explaining...will sort it tom. Its still scanning the first lot so when thats done will go to bed and finish the rest tomorrow....again, thanks for your help! Much appreciated!

  • hello mr alien! Just redoing the scan - it shut down so have to start again...will then remove mcafee with eager anticipation cos the low memory message has been driving me up the wall! Re the avira one will I have to update it regularly and is it free?

all programs I list are free unless I say otherwise
    Yes ~ auto updates
Set it to not scan at all (So you choose when to) otherwise it will scan daily (which is pointless and wears the hard drive out)

Might be an idea to remove mcafee FIRST mind

  • dont worry I will...not that dull...I dont think...waiting for the other one to scan as dont want to risk it in case sommat goes wrong...method in this madness :p !!
