I am a FTB, although STILL saving  which is wearing slightly thin.
So far in the deposit fund I have 10k.
In my loca area I can get a one bedroom house or flat for 75-80k. If i wanted a two bedroom prices are 100-105k.
I just wondered how much of a deposit you all had sorted, if any at all?
Am feeling like i will be saving for many centuries to come!!
Things are improving tho as i have my first teaching job set up for September, as a newly qualified teacher. So at least that is job security!

Hi Ali,
Well done on the savings! IMO the bigger the deposit the better as it means a smaller mortgage or perhaps money for any extras that may appear i.e Solicitor bills etc
Generally peeps raise a minimum of 10% of what they want to buy. We had saved £40K which meant we only required a £98K mortgage for our house; this was well below what we had budgeted for:A although i would say I am not a typical case as not everyone can raise this amount.
It is tough but stick in there and it will all come good in the end!
p.s Well done on the teaching job too, I'm starting my PGDE in Aug!:DSpreading the gospel that is Martin Lewis to the future generation....I'm a Home Economics Teacher and being thrifty is the way!:A0 -

We had over 15%. I know it probably seems like a slog, but just remember the more you save up now, the less you have to pay back later.
Congrats on getting the mortgage sorted HockeyDuo! :TIt's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0 -
Hockey do you still envisage completing on 24th April? What else do you have to do? Or is everything sorted?0

We have to sign the missives which is basically making the house 'officially' ours. We then have to transfer the deposit to the solicitor and he will get the Lender to pay the outstanding balance.
After that we will have to pay a mighty bill to the solicitor, prob about £900.
So yes we are still on track to complete on the 24th. Our solicitor is on holiday so can't talk to him until Tues, Grrrr! I have been told though that is all the hard work done although I won't believe it until I have the keys in my hand!
I have learned not to take anything for granted and always prepare yourself for the worst case scenario. That way if something goes wrong you are prepped or pleasantly surprised when it goes right!
p.s Bear in mind I am buying in Scotland which seems to be a shorter supposibly quicker process. If we do complete on 24th it will have taken 8 weeks; start to finish.Spreading the gospel that is Martin Lewis to the future generation....I'm a Home Economics Teacher and being thrifty is the way!:A0 -

Hi Ali-we had a 30% deposit, but that was with help from very nice parents!!:rotfl: Otherwise, we would still have quite afew yrs to go in saving it up! I think most people try to save at least 10%, but it would be better f you had a bigger deposit, as sometimes you get the better lending rates with a larger deposit!
Keep at it though!!..it is really hard to save as I always find I have something I want to buy every month!! heehee! You've done a good job of it already!!:j..... and good luck with the teaching job!!0
