Not switched it on yet as I've got a lot to do today and if I start playing.........
I want a system disk - I take it these cost? I'm fond of reformatting to get shot of any rubbish supplied and starting from fresh untouched os as it were but reading through the bumph it seems I can't do this unless I get a disk from Dell?
Anyone know offhand how much?
I got one off ebay, cost me about £10
the Dell disks just install the OS and ask you for the number off the COA sticker (got the feeling the latest ones have a "ghost" partition that you can boot into and restore the factory settings)
if you need the drivers you can download them to disk from the Dell support area for freeEx forum ambassador

Anyone who wants one, I know this worked yesterday no problem for a friend of mine.
1) Call through to HOME sales (must be home)
2) As soon as the person answers (India or Ireland, doesn't matter) get the person's name in full.
3) Say to the person, "Hi Vijay/Bob/Jane, just to let you know that I have tried to place an order with Dell a couple of times now and had the phone put down on me (say this whether you have or haven't). I have spoken to customer services and they have told me that this call is being logged. All I have to do is call them back and they will track this back to you via my telephone number (this is true by the way!). I only mention this Vijay/Bob/Jane, because I don't want you to get into a discplinary position with your employers (apparently it is a cardinal sin to hang up on a customer)
4) Now, please can I order one of these laptops that you are advertising at £299.
Obviously, then ask for any upgrades (screen and battery seem popular)...
Please can someone post if they have any problems or successes ordering...0 -

Son has all singing all dancing Sony lappy with it's own xp home disk. Can I format Dell lappy and install from son's copy of xp but use my licence key from bottom of machine?
My screen has 3 dead pixels (1 top right/1 bottom left/1 centre but inch from bottom of screen). I'm not overly concerned though as I don't think they will bother me with then being where they are.
I doubt Dell would do much anyway?Herman - MP for all!0 -

Start -> All Programs -> Dell Accessories -> Dell OS Recovery CD
Just slap a blank CDR (costs about 10p) in the drive and away you go
Note that you can only do this once, then the files are removed from your HD.
(but you might be able to create a copy from the CD you have just produced)
This OS CD will not be just a basic WIN XP CD but will also include all the drivers originally installed on the laptop."Now to trolling as a concept. .... My in-law tried this on his pc and it failed miserably!
However - he phoned Dell - told them this and how cr*p it was and how he'd spent £600 odd quid on a system - blah blah blah - they sent him a free cd eventually - he kept demanding to go higher - think they figured a £5 cd for a bit of piece and quiet was worth it!!
p.s. my laptop has finished it's trip to germany and arrived in manchester this morning - maybe get it sometime today!!0 -
Sadly my laptop has been delayed due to adverse weather conditions or some crud and UPS now say its for tomorrow delivery
grrr. oh well. enjoyable 2 days holiday from work at home I spose....
