Got Sky+ HD? Check if your box is faulty, and being recalled

The Pace box was a write off, I didnt gamble on a refurb Thomson, Sky authorised a new box and then they palmed me off with a refurbed Thomson when the engineers arrived. I only took it as the next "special heights team" would be another 8 days away. I had waited 10 days previous and experienced 4 broken appointments in that period, 2 and a half days off work in the middle of a major recession. A cancelled holiday for the weekend due to me paying back my hours for the ones Sky wasted on my days off. I dont even have faith that will get me through to the end of my credits in 3 months time.

The recording failed due to "power cut" is a very common issue with the Thomson HD boxes. They used very cheap components in the construction of the power supply and this causes these symtons. Several retailors actually sell replacelemt power supplies and this an option that a lot of HD subscribers take if they are outside of the 12 month Sky warranty.
My 2nd Thomson had this issue a lot and was swapped out with another refurb thomson which lasted about a week before the remote control receiver died

Why do you need a special heights team to swap the box? Surely you only need special heights if they need to access the dish. If you have good signal quality/strength then you don't need special heights. I live in a town house and after the dish was up all the vists have been non special heights.

I wish I had read this on Thursday when I got the call, I got told that I would get 3 months of Sky Mix free no mention of just HD. Also no mention of a refurbished box. The engineer delivered my new box at 12.30 by 1pm I was on the phone to Sky (took 20 minutes) to complain about the constant buzz from the box, the failure of the contractor to reconnect all the cables correctly and the huge difference in sound quality and volume on Sky and Sky HD channels. I asked Sky to get the contractor back with my box, he did ring and say he would be back but then informed us about the box being refurbed. I rang Sky again (12 minutes) who informed me yes this was correct and if I wanted a new box I would have to pay again as they replaced with new within 90 days - I have now discovered they new about the fault in December (within 90 days for me)! I only bought the box in September and took 2 months to sort out a complaint. If I wanted to complain further I would have to put this writing. The engineer did return my box, after having to get permission from Sky to do so.
I think I might copy my complaint to Sky to Watchdog, Which, trading standards as if they just modify the 100,000 PACE boxes send them out as new they are making a lot of money as they then have got rid of the oldest Thomson refurbished boxes which have possibly been sat in warehouse for some time. I smell a ratIf you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours
Thank you to everyone who posts. :A0 -
Dont bother using Sky HD + I am not surprised Sky has had problems as they do nothing to solve problems for existing customers and even take 28 days to repay charges on accounts that have been collected incorectly.
Most users are also not aware that thier lovely new Sky HD+ or Sky+ box will not function correctly without an active account. It will not record the freeview channels.
personally DONT BOTHER and buy something other than SKY HD+
yes I am an ex disgruntled customer the one who leaves sky whilst it takes on five others at a cheaper chargeing price.
Dont be surprised SKY doesnt seem to care.0 -
Also an engineer who came to my house to replace my Sky+ box some time ago said that the boxes Sky fit are all secondhand refurbished boxes. You can demand a new one but most people dont know this.0

My girlfriend is at the end of her tether now with sky! The sky hd box keeps on reseting..every 20 to 2 minutes!! Driving us mad- now as far as im aware this is sky breaching their service to us. I am gonna try and get out of my contract, with 7 months left- what do people think my chances are? They are not providing the service my other half signed up for. Anyone reading this who doesnt have sky they are terrible!!!0

Hmm, sounds like the box is toast, Sky will probably claim its your box and you need to buy a new one. If you cancel your recordings will go. Personally I find sky unreasonable to deal with the only "Big fat juicy Worm Rate" Sky offered me when my account was terminating because of thier misconduct was that i could have sky or broadband with them cheap. Sky just doesnt realise if i had done this and had to cancel sky as they hadnt repaid me would have left my house hold without communications or internet when i terminated sky!
I expect Sky will try to charge you for the six month regardless m8 I sympathise. You could try the chief exec but i think the plush carpet has gone and you'll be cancelled like me out of frustration very soon You'll soon be in the 1for5 club!0 -

Try downloading the software this can often solve problems.
Unplug box from the mains (dont just switch off via the off button)
Hold down the backup button on the box (not remote!)
Keep holding it down and switch on the box
Keep holding the backup button after about 20 seconds a message will come on the screen and you can let go of the button
It will download the latest software0 -
It seems there also now upsetting the retail outlets that they have sold contracts to to sell Sky HD+ under license at £200.00 now theve dropped the price top £49.99 I am not surprised their upset. Perhaps someone the size of Tescos can take them to task!0
