Its been interesting reading this thread, as I suspected it sounds like new Pace HD boxes are being replaced with old refurbs. I bought an HD box from Tesco for £199 and installed it myself as my Sky+ box was dying. It was a brand new Pace with one of the affected serial numbers but it has operated absolutely perfectly, very impressively in fact. It does have one of the recall serial number but although I registed all the details with Sky I wonder if they will try to replace it as I bought it from Tesco? As they say its not dangerous my engineers instinct is to keep my lovely box, unless an engineer actually turns up with a brand new modern replacement, I am happy to chance it.
  • I think the Tescos box is a PaceBox like you said. I considered this myself before all the problems I had with Sky. If its registered with Sky and goes wrong and your paying a subscription they might try to change it it depends on who the warranty provider is?

I also wonder if the software upgrade might also be causing problems. lets face it they had so many problems getting Sky Player running and blamming it on customrs machines when it was the kontiki version upgrade that mnaged to solve many of the problems.

Its not even that all Sky HD Pace boxes are being replaced by refurbished ones they all are even the SKY + boxes and maybe the basic setup too. My Sky + box was replaced with a refurbished one some years ago.

I am suprised that your new box had a refurb sticker on it. Guess that sheds some bad light on the Tescos boxes ?

    Slight misunderstanding probably from me!

My Pace HD box was not refurb, it was clearly brand new, which is why I was willing to pay quite a lot - that and the fact I could install myself and not have to sign up for HD - yet. My point being I paid £199 for a modern, brand new box, no way would I allow it to be replaced with anything less.

Meanwhile it makes a very good Sky+ box! I am still convinced they will eventually drop the HD charge so then I am all set.
  • thats a relief as that would have been bad news to all customers of Tescos LOL

Dont think Sky will drop the HD cost it makes to much money from it. I presume that helps with the cost of the service. After all someone has to make sure that that signal is being sent to your box to ensure it records and pauses properly. Must cost a fortune at least 10 per box LOL.

Please bear in mind that the box is still not yours even if you paid £199 for it as it wont record and pause live signals if you lapse your contract as sky will turn this off and disable it.

The box is his as he owns it, same for all Sky equipment all customers own it.

Sky are contacting people with the Tesco bought boxes i beleive, you can also take back to Tesco and they are giving a full refund, you need to ring the Tesco helpling and get authorisation beforehand

Even if you cancel your contract, after your initial period, the box is yours.

EDIT - beat me to it deanos
  • So please tell me if you buy the box working that records content in the shop or wherever you purchase it from then own it.

How sky can legally alter its content then stoping its functionality that it had when you bought it? there must be a loophole in the ownership?

On another note how can Sky also stop you from viewing material you havent viewed but dowloaded whilst you subscribed and paid the royalty to the owner through your subscription unless they can change the box?

As you have all indicated that you then own the box
