  • just before anyone asks I dont work for sky or Freeview or Humax I am a software engineer.

    And just for the maths

    SKY HD+ 49.99 + INST £30 +£19.99@12 months for free view recording for a year = £319.87

no wonder they dropped the HD box price form £199 lol as this would have been £468.88.

HUMAX FREESAT HDR+ BOX £293 free recording forever

Also the HUMAX has a 2 year warranty

Wonder which one i will be going for as with Skys Excellant customer services being the way they are.

I have 2 HD boxes, new in october, they were samsung, they were faulty, then I got given 2 refurbished thomsons, so I went nuts, as I had paid £225 for this...anyway I got 2 new thomsons.
these have now been replaced with thomsons 8 times for 1 box downstairs and 5 times for the box upstairs. no compensation offered, nothing, and the boxes have both gone again now, missed recording, technical faults, no signal is being received, power cut, also the fan is very noisey, and on 3 of the boxes there was a smell of burning plastic, which made your eyes water somewhat, also when you record something even if it doesn't tape the red light is permenantly on, also the phonehome light is on all the time...so annoying, I cannot get freeview but I believe I can get freesat HD now in this area as a friend of mine has it, so I may go to that once my 12 months is up with sky, only problem with that is I like sky1 for the ross kemp in afghanistan programs and bones and well a whole lot more.
I was also told by the installer that he thought pace and amstrad were crap boxes... as are samsung and thomson...

My point was and still is you cannot receive Freeview through a satellite dish - and you can't.

Free to Air is not the same as Freeview, which is a platform just as Sky is.

Not all channels on Freeview are free.
  • I think Sky has tied up CH4 at moment but its going FREESAT HD shortly. There are also supposed to be more channels comming up this year for free service. I am not sure what the Freeview HD format is going to look like as it has much more limited bandwidth to put more channels on it and I beleive it is already getting close to this or is on the limuit already. FreeSat as you can see has alot more scope for channels 500+ and eventually I personally belive if compression on the internet doesnt get better in the near future allowing live streaming of HD from broadband then its very possible we will end up with many suppliers of satalite as if more people take up Freesat then more more people will be accessing the material .

I am not sure I understand you then as you certainly can recieve all if not most of the Digital channels from a Digibox on a sky box without a subscription. Looking at the Humax channel list taken from thier website it seems that they are very similar . What are you saying it cant recieve?

I am simply saying that you (or anyone else) should not use the term Freeview when you mean Free To Air.

Nothing more nothing less. I have not made any comment on the channels you can or cannot receive.
  • Ah i see sorry for the confussion. I guess its probably a copyrighted term then?
  • The interesting point about this thread is to bring hometo me the shear number of sky customers who are anoyed disgruntled or generally having severe problems with there kit. I am quite amazed and it puts my problems in context no wonder they are not bothered trying to resolve my issue with them or as it appears will they do with the astounding numbers of other customers.
