My grandmother's in the hospital. She's 93 and at the moment her left arm is completely immobile. They tried to X-ray her right arm, and when she argued with them they had to go and check with my mother because they didn't believe her.

She's in a room with 6 beds, and although there's a two-visitors-per-bed policy the nurses refuse to enforce it in case they get shouted at and the woman in the bed opposite has had around eight adult visitors, all with at least one small child, at each visiting time, and they bring smelly food like McDonalds with them every time.

She's on oxygen all the time and is in a lot of pain. The doctor tried to give her IV morphine but wasn't able to find a vein. So he gave her two paracetamol instead. The pain's bad enough to need morphine and they gave her OTC medicine.

I'm 3000km away and there is nothing I can do. I'm not even allowed in the ward as it's for people with infections and I'm pregnant. I also can't send flowers because of the risk of contamination. I hate this.

We're hoping to get her moved into a different ward at a minimum or else to organise private care if possible. The level of care is completely unacceptable - the nurses had a porter install her in a chair and then insisted she get back into bed. She's 93. She can't just hop up on one of those high beds, and they refused to help her themselves.

I've been looking for a Get Well Soon balloon available for same day delivery online and haven't found anything. Grrr.

Not very MSE but interflora linky HERE do these before 2pm today for same day delivery.
Level of care was awful in my Gdads oncology ward they just left him to get on with it - he can't even get out of bed! But the main hospital was good, I can't fault that and most of the nurses do their best with the staff they have available. Hope things resolve themselves Sugar :)

I am really shocked at this!!

i am a nurse (as many of you know!) and people would not have been treated like this in 'my day' on the wards!

If you can't give iv morphine you can still give another stronger painkiller IM (in a muscle) or subcut (just under the skin!) also if she is in continuous pain that is not being relieved she could be on some sort of patient controlled pump of pain relief! Also there are tonnes of much stronger pain killers that can be taken orally

As for not enforcing the rule about visitors that seems mad! Also how come if it's an infections ward that they allow a young child in and also allow mcd's in???

horrible for you so sending lotsa hugs xxx

My mother has an appointment with the ward doctor today. We're fairly lucky in that a few of the family work in the medical field so we know what we're talking about and how it all works, but my mother's not one of the medics and she's the one having to deal with it all.

I was scandalised by her paracetamol. Aside from the complete inhumanity of leaving an elderly woman in pain, the total lack of interest in providing equivalent medication when the IV insertion didn't work is shocking to me. I've seen where she used to keep her veins and I can see why they wouldn't be able to get an IV into her, but there's still the IM option - or just give morphine orally and up the dose a bit. Letting young kids run around on a ward where there are immunosuppressed sick people and nasty infections is also really disturbing to me, although TBH if I was local I'd be sneaking my grandmother food in as well - the food in that particular hospital is shocking.

I sent her some balloons, and my mother is printing out scan pictures so she can see the great-grandchild. For the past ten years, we've made sure that her Christmas presents are always something she has to look forward to later in the year, so she's actually striving to keep in good health. I'm doing my bit in spades this year ... hopefully it will be enough.

So sorry /sugarSpun to hear this - Hope it gets sorted out
Things like this are totally shocking and worrying - maybe louder protests by ordinary people are needed to shake things up. Older people deserve as much or more care and consideration.

Have voted for Melanie Marshall as instructed (do I get a star?)!!

Also ordered £10 Amazon voucher form Ipsos today to go towards Christmas
and pair of fur lined boots for GrandDaughter from M & S sale for £1!
