I did this http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/food/foodandfeatures/sainsburys_food_ranges/basics/why_buy_basics/prawn_tomato_curry.htm last week, was really good, substituted larger prawns that were on special offer, you can just add more tinned toms than those pomodorino ones.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Tesco are currently doing buy one get one free on two packs of naan bread for 79p which nets down to 20p per naan bread. Had one for dinner tonight and I'm going to get another four packs tomorrow and stick them in the freezer.0

Try Goldfish Brand curry paste, found in Tesco. A tub is about £1.15 and will make lots of curries. All you do is mix it with boiling water or stock - how easy is that!
It is the closest to chinese curry I've ever tasted.
That sounds nice im going to try and get some next time i go to Tesco:D
I tried the tinned curry sauce from Tesco its either 4p or 6p a tin, its ok but i dont think ill bother getting it again, i think im too fussy!:rotfl:0 -

I am very surprised at comments on this thread where people state they have got this or that for 15p!
I appreciate that this is a money saving thread but unless this is a genuine bargain, any curry sauce that normally retails at 15p is just going to ruin anything it is added to?
I am first in the queue for a bargain but not at expense of taste.
Am I alone in this view?
I agree with you on that...as ive just said i wasnt keen on the Tesco curry sauce in a tin and i wouldnt like it even if something else was added to it as the taste would still be there. The kids liked it though.0 -

Mely, its usually in the specialist foods section (the oriental section) and not where the jars of curry are kept, so check that aisle out first. I usually add chicken stock to it not water but you can use either. HTH..0 -
Thank you lilmuppets especially and everyone else for your input.
arsenalboy, how many times have you woken up after a match to say "expletive" I spent x amount on a curry.
Thanks budgetboy, but it was the sauce that caught my eye and what I could add it to.
The 15p curry sauce from Sainsburys tastes gorgeous like almost any food when a person gets home after a nights drinking. Saving £££'s and ages waiting around in take-aways.
Don't knock it 'til you've tried it.0 -
I am absolutely in love with Mayflower curry powder - I can only find it in Morrisons though, not sure if you can buy it anywhere else?? - 99p and that makes 9 portions - tastes exactly like a curry from the chinese and is ready in about 3 mins!! perfect!!0

I cook with the spices (basically coriander, cumin, turmeric, cardamon, chillie) all dead cheap at your local asian corner store (as well as authentic pastes in wide varieties, coconut milk and block, lemon grass). OK it's more time consuming than the supermarket ready curries, or a takeaway, but pretty well everything you make can be done in larger batches and frozen in suitable portions - so next time you've your own ready meal in the freezer. Meat/fish veggie curries (wouldn't freeze a Biriani), Dhall, rice, bahjis all freeze well.0

I always make my own curry. I use chicken fillets usually and add mushrooms/onion/peppers and sometimes fruit to bulk it out - bananas or pineapple. Pataks curry paste is the best for me (1 jar lasts for about 3 curries), you add some water or milk to it once you've browned the meat. I also usually add a huge dollop of half-fat creme fraiche and a sachet of coconut milk/paste. If I fancy a change maybe I'll use tinned tomatoes instead of the creme faiche but the kids don't like it as much.
I probably make home made stuff half of the week like stew, spag bol, fish pie, burgers, macaroni and then raid the freezer for fish fingers towards the end of the week when I can't be bothered or the kids have stuff on to go to and we have to feed them really quickly. I think its alot cheaper buying stuff and making it yourself from scratch. Some of the supermarkets have good recipes in their magazines and of course you can look online.0
