Alternative to Take-Away Curry

I lost my job this xmas, possibly won't get another at 52. So have been looking at ways at cutting back on expenditure.

We still like to go out to our local on a Friday & Saturday night. Often we will spend £15 - £20 on a Chinese or Indian take-away on the way home.

This week at Sainsburys we saw O/B 440g curry sauce at £0.15p per jar. O/B 250g prawns for £1.99 and 1Kg O/B Basmati Rice for £1.69.

For much less than a fiver, just had a feast. Surprisingly nice, filling and satisfying. Also easy and quick to prepare, chicken tomorrow, bye-bye take-aways.

  • We make all our own curries

Usually Chicken as the meat content.

Spices you would need are cumin, ground corriander, fresh chillies, ground tumeric, garam marsala, cinnamon,

I am happy to send you some recipies if you would like (don't have them to hand atm)
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice
  • Thanks nuttyrockeress, It can turn out expensive buying the individual ingredients. Will take up your kind offer If and when I get back to work. Thank you.

A friend is here having coffee, she says that last year she saw this sauce for as little as 3p a jar at Streatham Sainsburys. Has anyone else seen it that cheap or similar products on offer now in other supermarkets.

I usually just view these forums, but thought S/Curry worth a mention. It's gorgeous, but don't let them know that, they'll probably hike the price.

Have you tried Asdas take away curry for two? - at £3 it is great value - and tastes good too.
    hope this helps

nuttyrockeress would it be cheeky to ask if you could send those recipes to me? and if anyone has one for either shami kebabs with the sauce they serve with them and tarka dahl that would be fantastic. We love indian but find it increasingly hard to afford it.

    Thanks steve

Try Goldfish Brand curry paste, found in Tesco. A tub is about £1.15 and will make lots of curries. All you do is mix it with boiling water or stock - how easy is that!
It is the closest to chinese curry I've ever tasted.

Got an international food shop down the road, a 2kg pack of chili powder/cumin etc. is like 99p :)

And for the curry sauces, asda smart price/tesco value were 4p a jar/can a while back. Bought loads, they are really nice, asda don't seem to do them anymore though.

Never had a goldfish curry :rotfl:

BTW Asian supermarkets are a great place to get your ingredients from. In my experience they are cheap and the staff are helpful in finding the stuff you need.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Try the Curry Night thread in Moneysaving old style for recipes: -

  • For even more authenticity I put 10 crushed Senna tablets and a cup of Lactulose in my home made curries.
