Advice wanted about uni problem.

None of my tutors ever respond to any of my communications either, and cancel/change lectures at the drop of a hat, its ridiculous. I'm paying thousands of pounds a year to be taught by them!
Your tuition fees cover less than a third of your degree costs and undergraduate teaching is only a part of the academic staff's responsibilities.
It's not just a big school for grown ups!0 -
Things have changed now, you are paying tuition fees to the uni so YOU are a paying customer.... complain, complain, complain... Tell them you want a proportional refund on tuition fees.
Your comment represents all that's wrong with education these days; it's not a commodity to be bought and sold, neither are students customers!0 -
Have you checked the uni regulations for non-submissions?
At my uni you'd need to apply for mitigating circumstances and the tutor would have no say in the outcome, although they can sometimes support applications - depends on the reason.0 -

What part of the term "customer" do you not understand?
I won't even bother posting the definition of the term customer as anyone with an ounce of common sense knows you are talking rubbish.
I have both studied and worked at a University so know what i'm talking about.
Oh and please don't blame me (or my comments) for the introduction of tuition fees, blame the Labour government. It was them that turned it into "a commodity that can be bought and sold"0 -

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to point out with any of that post.0 -
I think its worth noting that if student education is indeed a purchase, you are only purchasing the right to access the resources, it is the responsability of the individual to attend these lectures/labs etc that they have paid for, and they were made available. Nothing to complain about.
By the looks of things you are at nottingam uni (i am also). All that can be done is extenuating circumstances forms or something similar and hope that you get someone to approve it.

Link shows what you should do. Requires evidence that you couldnt get though, so could be tricky. If your at another uni, then im sure its very similar.0 -
Arguing over what terms describe the relationship between students and a university is not the subject of this thread and does not help the OP in any way. If you wish to argue about tuition fees do it on another thread - I'm sure it can be classed as money saving.
TrickyNiki,
I think the webcam idea is a good one. Also apologising to your lecturer and explaining to him your difficulties and worries about the course face to face will eliminate misunderstanding and will ensure you can have a grown up conversation about your options and clear the air with him.
Good luck xx0 -
yes it's the same at our uni if we need an extension for whatever reason we have to apply not to the lecturer but complete a form with a good reason (snow would be a good one) and send it to course leader. Could you visit student support or the nus rep? It seems a shame to fail if you've done the work. Good luck!0

Just noticed also..

Unacceptable reasons:
"Transport issues. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they arrive at the examination on time, irrespective of the form of transport used or relied upon."0 -
I agree with the post re: mitigating circumstances......Is this done via an independent person?
Wh have a newly formed 'helpzone' at our Uni. who deal with all extensions now.
I recently had to get an extension due to computer nightmare.....but out of courtesy I informed the module tutor and my personal tutor. I was supposed to have gone in on Thursday 5 Feb to get the forms sorted but unfortunatley we were snowed off and Uni shut. However, I kept everyone informed as the last thing I wanted to do was to just turn up 24hours before assignment deadline and go ''ere give me an extension"!!!!!
As others have said clarifying to the letter what the procedure for missing deadlines is key here.
In my first year I accidently missed a deadline....realised at 930am the next day. I had completed it the day before but wasn't due in and in my head thought it was the next day. I was sooooo upset as thought I would fail. Once I realised my error I contacted module tutor and the course admin person. I emailed them the finished assignement at 930am when I realised to prove ti was done too.
Fortunately they believed it was a pure mistake and all was ok...incidently I got an A!!
Can't you send in all the written work you have done in support of your project via email to prove you have done the work and ask to show the actual 'live' demo another time???0
