  • We had a coursework deadline last week when the snow was really bad, the module leaders made it very clear via email that the weather conditions were not reasonable ground for missing a deadline, and if the deadline was missed we would only be awarded a max of 40% for that piece of work
*wonders when they will make dressing gowns acceptable day wear?*

Yes, that would certainly be the case at my uni.

The student would have to apply for mitigating circumstances and they'd need evidence they could not get in.

I'm not sure how they'd prove this as it would normally be a medical certificate or the like, but I do know they would not take a students word for it!

OP - did anyone from your area get into work/college/uni that day? Or were there any buses running, or taxi services prepared to go that way? Did your OH go into work?
  • Thank you for all your replys. I dont expect a degree handed on a plate, I am not a child either looking for a subsitite parent to be hand held through the course.

I missed a hand in due to snow. I have been told that I cannot hand it in now and will lose 40% of my grade. I was trying to rectify the situation as I do not believe snow fall was within my control and I dont believe I should be penilised for this.

I emailed the lecturer yesterday about the snow and also to apologise again. I realise the tone of 1 of my emails was out of order. I put
"Again I must apologise for the tone of my email, it is very difficult to express emotions within this format. Suffice to say I mean no offence, it was just a panicked student worrying about her grade." I then went on to say that the snow today might be a problem.

The reply I got was to "Please stop sending me emails!" and that if I wished to discuss something with him I should do it in the timetabled slot that we have each week. I dont really like this method as there is no record of communication. I am willing to do this today though and see what happens.

No busses were running here, no cars were able to get out of my area my parner was unable to get to work as well as my neighbours.

With regard to employment the position seems to be that if you are told only make a journey if it is essential then you can refuse to endanger yourself going into work and surely the same applies with Uni.

Ok, my advice would be to contact the person in charge of extenuationg/mitigating circunstances at your uni and ask the what evidence they'd expect for a situation like yours. I wouldn't delay with that as there are clearly defined time limits, as a rule, and they won't necessarily accept claims after the event. The information should be on your web pages.

Speak with him in the tutorial, as you've said you are going to, and if there is a mix up with attendance, make sure it is cleared up. Perhaps you could also ask him how he'd prefer you make contact in the future - there are still many people about who hate email, and not just in academia!

My other points were not actually directed at you and I apologise for not making that clear earlier.

  • there is also a very clear comment (not from the OP) about how someone is paying thousands of pounds to be taught by lecturers - well clearly the money is going to the wider university for facilities too and that is the post that caused a negative reaction (which seemed reasonable to me!).

That was my post and I feel it was wholly justifiable. You don't know just how frustrating it is when I do want to work hard and totally understand the meaning of "independent study", but am unable to do that because my lecturers just fail to turn up, have absolutely no contact with me outside of planned sessions, and generally act like they don't give a monkeys whether I pass or fail. The information we get in timetabled sessions just isn't enough to help me do assignments, and what I was complaining about was that even when I ask for pointers towards using these 'facilities' you say I'm mostly paying for I'm ignored. Its like drawing blood from a stone trying to get in contact with any of my lecturers. And the university admin team are a whole different matter I could scream.

If academic staff don't turn up for lecturers/seminars/tutorials then this is obviously wrong and needs to be dealt with. However, I don't really see why you expect to have contact outside planned sessions or why you think the tutors' attitude to your success is relevant.

Some staff do "go the extra mile" but that doesn't put the others in the wrong or mean that they're not doing their job correctly if they don't. You really shouldn't need "pointers" on using independent study facilities when you're working at this level, I'm afraid.
