Flight Upgrades

If I ever travel club class having paid for it (possibly myself, more likely for business travel) I'm going to make a point of dressing as scruffy as possible. I'd like to see them ask me to put on some trousers!
This doesn't work for Singapore air, We tried it and the extremely snotty women said we don't give upgrades........ i can only assume she had just been dumped or something
Although we did get exit seats and a nice cake, excellent food and service on board.

We flew emirates on our honeymoon. We were waiting at the check in desk and there was one lady who was really grumpy looking and wasnt smiling at the people she was dealing with and I was thinking please dont let us get her - we got her!!! My husband politely said to her as we are going on our honeymoon if there is anyone being upgraded today please could we be considered? We both dressed smartly in the hope this would help and she turned round and said very grumpily Emirates NEVER upgrade people!! We did end up getting a honeymoon cake ob board the plane though!!!0

Emirates do. Sometimes.
Our flight was overbooked.
Got to gate - chap took our boarding card (with pre-booked over-wing exit seats) and ripped them up. I was just about to have a tippy tantrum when he smiled and said - 'Your lucky day'. Handed us two boarding cards with seats nos 8A and 8B.... And very very nice it was too.
Totally unexpected. Mrs SM said 'Did I hear right....?' And we were both wearing jeans / T shirts. Cheapest economy tickets.0 -

You had an operational upgrade due to overbooking, which in reality probably meant a number of people were upgraded. Great news for you though, so congratulations. :T
Your attire won't matter one jot though as the operational upgrades will be most like be sorted based on FF status, fare or just the random selection of some passengers to upgrade on the whim of the gate agent.0 -

Or perhaps in this case the fact that they had paid something extra (i.e. exit row seats) meant they were above those who had just paid the cheapo fares with no add-ons. Just a thought.
I agree though, all airlines with more than one class of service will upgrade in this situation - they're not going to stop selling tickets or turn people away when there are still seats available, whatever class they're in.0 -

Can I ask how you managed to pre-book the exit rows? I travel with Emirates quite a bit (and have been upgraded too) but can't pre-book the exit rows when booking the flight or checking in on-line.0 -

Lmao
I have been called many things and that being one of them, Skywitch being another :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
No there is not a dress code in Upper Class at VA. BUT, as already said if PE is over booked they will look at upgrading those that are frequent flyers ie Gold first etc, then it will be full fare passengers who are smartly dressed.
I am assuming that this was the case when being bumped to Upper, to have the miles for Economy to PE , I am assuming a Silver or Gold card holder ??

I've often wondered about this. Does it ever mean you can tell who in upper has been upgraded because they're so much smarter than everyone else? I mean, I wouldn't dress up if I'd paid for it...0 -
No I would'nt say that everyone is smarter and agree that if I had paid x amount of pounds to fly in Upper or BA club/First then I would wear want I want.
However IMO ( I dont speak for Virgin obviously ) I would look at someone wearing a collared short rather than someone with a T-shirt on especially on a business route like NY or LA
but as said that is my view, saying that I have seen people sat next to celebs wearing allsorts, so its not like VA wont allow a FULL fare passenger to get on with ripped jeans and sit next to Gordon Brown !I am a Travel AgentMy company’s ABTA number is V2043.
