Flight Upgrades

Hi
I think my boyf may be being extremely naive here, but do airlines these days, if you are extremely nice and ask politely ever consider you for a complimentary upgrade at check in?
I'm not holding out any hope, but he seems to think if we mention we're on honeymoon, are dressed smartly etc there might be a chance?
We're flying THai Airways to Bangkok in August - If there's not a hoipe I'd rather wear my heaviest (and therefore not necessqarily smartes) clothes for the flight due to the 20kg allowance.
Also, does anyone know how much Thai charge for excess baggage? I'm, a bit of a shopper...

The only upgrades I've managed were -
BA - LHR - BKK (Premium economy to club). Didn't ask for it. As mentioned on the other thread upgrades go to high status frequent flyers without discounted fares.
Was just before xmas. was travelling solo (this normally helps i believe) and had managed to snag the single seats that BA have in premium economy. when checking in was sent to a desk where the bloke wasn't ready so while his system was booting up got talking to him. he started talking about working over xmas and was dreading it as EVERYONE asks for an upgrade as "they are travelling at xmas".
i told him i was a frequent flyer and knew it's useless asking. he agreed. he then hands me my ticket and said "sorry, i can't give you lounge access". "Strange" i thought... i knew i couldn't get in to the lounge as i was in prem economy...
thought no more about it and then when boarding i handed the people boarding the plane my boarding card and the machines starts to beep. she goes over to the computer and says "oh, mr bond. you've been upgraded to club. i hope that's ok?"
too chuffing right it was. spent the next 11 hours quaffing champagne
Virgin - LAX - LHR (Premium economy to upper) Didn't ask for it again. i was asked if i had any long tousers (as i was wearing shorts)... nudge nudge wink wink.. I retrieved some out of my case and myself and the wife were upgraded. this was paid for by airmiles and we were returning from our honeymoon.0 -
A friend who travels long haul frequently says that she always asks how much an upgrade will cost, never for a 'free' upgrade. Sometimes, the price is astronomical but she has frequently upgraded for very little money and has occasionally been given it for free

I have never know a dress code in upper? Sure i flew last time in Upper with 3/4 trousers and a pair of Nike Air Rifts.0 -

well there was with me!
i had combat shorts and a pair of sandals on.
doesn't matter when you get onboard and get in them PJ's!
when i first flew upper to Jo'burg i got on the plane and a flight attendant asked me if i'd like some pj's. i replied "yes please". he asked what size. i asked for XL. He said "ooh.. .you look like a medium to me!" winked and walked off.
didn't get too much sleep on that flight

How did you pay with airmiles but not ask for it? They must have asked you if you were happy for your airmiles to pay for the upgrade
