Because 80% of newlyweds get upgraded on honeymoon flights?omelette451 wrote: »Oh really? So why has it happened to four of the five couples whose weddings I've been to recently?
Now there's a statistic that has question marks written all over it.
The MSE Dictionary
Loophole - A word used to entice people to read clearly written Terms and Conditions.
Rip Off - Clearly written Terms and Conditions.
Terms and Conditions - Otherwise known as a loophole or a rip off.0 -

Virgin - LAX - LHR (Premium economy to upper) Didn't ask for it again. i was asked if i had any long tousers (as i was wearing shorts)... nudge nudge wink wink.. I retrieved some out of my case and myself and the wife were upgraded. this was paid for by airmiles and we were returning from our honeymoon.
I had a similar experience on the same route, they checked if I was wearing shoes (presumably as opposed to trainers) and then upgraded me from cattle to upper class.0 -

We're flying THai Airways to Bangkok in August - If there's not a hoipe I'd rather wear my heaviest (and therefore not necessqarily smartes) clothes for the flight due to the 20kg allowance.
Also, does anyone know how much Thai charge for excess baggage? I'm, a bit of a shopper...
Join Thai Airways frequent fliers club - as a new member (free to join) you'll automatically be given an extra 10k of luggage (each) and priority baggage handling. You can join online at www.thaiaways.com and even print off a copy of your membership card if it doesn't arrive in time.
I've never been charged a penny excess, even though one trip returning from Austrlia with a few days in Bangkok our baggage had grown to 80+ kilos
(I've always flown economy, smartly dressed and never been offered an upgrade)

Sorry, but you are being a bit optimistic here. Airline will not 'often' upgrade honeymooners if there is space available. Sadly those days are long gone by at least 10 years.
The original poster may strike it lucky, but as they are flying on Thai, their chances are virtually zero as they offer paid upgrades and will upgrade Thai Royal Orchid and Star Alliance status members first if they need to move anyone up to business for operational reasons.
The suggestion of asking how much for a paid upgrade is a good one. Thai have quite a variable upgrade pricing system, so you could get offered a bargain, plus it gives you a chance to mention it is your honeymoon etc.
Good advice too from researcher on joining Thai's frequent flyer scheme. That automatically should give a bit more flexibility on the baggage front, plus make you a bit more upgradeable, albeit at the bottom of the status list.
Most importantly, enjoy the flights and the honeymoon in Thailand!0 -
Have been offered Business Class when flying home from USA if I'm prepared to change to a flight a few hours later and fly to Manchester and take a connection rather than fly to London. Alas, I had a deadline for getting home and slummed it in economy...Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...0

If you look at my second post you'll see that my statement was based on four out of five couples whose weddings I've been to in the past 18 months or so. I know it's entirely subjective and not nearly enough to prove a trend, but it did work for them so I thought I'd share it with the OP.0 -

Fair enough and I wasn't questioning your experiences either. Out of interest were they all travelling on full scheduled carriers, or was it more the likes of Thomas Cook, Monarch etc? The reason why I ask is that the 2nd group of carriers are from experience a lot more amenable to being sweet talked into an upgrade or two.
Anyway, what we definitely do agree on is that it always worth a cheeky ask as you never know...

I don't remember all of them, but I'll happily say what I do know. Afaik only one was a charter; I don't remember which company (First Choice springs to mind?) but it was definitely Caribbean from MAN. Another was actually to BKK: they went one way BD/TG via LHR and the other TG/LH via FRA and while I'm not sure which was out and which was return, they got the upgrade for the first long-haul sector when checking in at MAN. There was something else to Asia from LHR, and the other I have absolutely no idea what it was. The one that didn't work was BA (no surprise there!). Sorry it's so vague.
Definitely.Anyway, what we definitely do agree on is that it always worth a cheeky ask as you never know...

THanks all - I've had a look at the frequent flyer program, but you dont get any extra baggage allowance until you've attained silver (not the basic level)status unfortunately0
