  • I read tat a good tip was to squeeze some ketchup onto a cloth, and wipe it over your jewellery, you can literally see the muck coming off!
When you are satisfied that all of the dirt has been lifted, polish off with a dry cloth until a shine is achieved.

If you use bleach, you will smell like a toilet LOL!:rotfl:

Line a dish with tin foil, put a teaspoon of soda crystals in it with some boiling water. When it's dissolved, put the jewellery in, leave for about 30 mins and it'll be all sparkly :D It might take a bit longer if the jewellery is very dirty, I cleaned some earrings that had been forgotton about for years, I think they took a couple of hours.

Is it safe to do this with jewellery set with stones? I have some Rennie Mackintosh design earrings which are a little tarnished but they all have a small coloured stone.

    Great tip, thanks tru.

I've just tried this out on a silver ring, I hadn't realised how manky it had become, it looks fab! Off to find some more things now :D

I've cleaned a gold ring with diamonds and another stone (not sure what it is - it's very dark blue, almost black) and a silver necklace with cubic zirconia, they're fine and they've both been dipped a few times :D

The only stones it wouldn't work on are things like opals, which are porous. Anything like a diamond should be fine.

Be careful with stones and boiling water. You could crack the stone as some are sensitive to heat.

  • I have just sorted through my jewellery as part of my big Christmas clean and some of it is looking abit worse for wear. I'd like to clean it, but I don't want to pay for one of those cleaners from one of the jewellery shops so are there any OS ways?

Yes. Take a non-metallic container (eg tuppaware tub). Place a small sheet of foil in the bottom of the tub. Add soda crystals (tablespoon should do if it's a smaller tub), then add warm/hot water.

Place the silver jewellery on top of the foil in the tub. Leave for approx 5 minutes (you should see small bubbles appearing in the water).

Take out carefully, rinse in clean water and immediately dry with a soft cloth.

If it's not clean enough, just plop back into the water and leave for a few more minutes or use a soft toothbrush while in the water to remove stubborn bits (mind any stones though). Then rinse and dry.

Works for Gold and Silver - clean my engagement ring this way regularly ;)

    :D
