  • Yeah Micra's are preety cheap to insure. Check this site if you want to know the supposed top 10. They are just a guideline but they should give you an idea if you are stuck.

  • Another vote for the Peugeot 107, £35,00 tax cheap to insure, up to 60 gallon and will do 95. (Should really say 70 but daughter admitted to the higher one coming home on a motorway. I did explain the error of her ways). They look good too.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

Becareful if you chose Quinn and its a learner driver....
  • Too right about Quinn!

I've been doing some online quotes for various cars for my first year insurance and have been pleased to see that for the car that I'm thinking of getting (Honda Civic 01 or 02 plate, 1.4) that Quinn are only coming out about £100 cheaper than Diamond (which were around about £800) for my first years insurance. Hoorah!

I know it doesn't sound like moneysaving, but having to deal with those muppets during the working day is bad enough - I will gladly pay £100 to insure somewhere (anywhere?) else.

To be fair it's probably not the staff, but the business model.

I was really worried though that they would come out with a price that was simply too cheap to refuse.

Phew. I can breathe a sigh of relief! :T

  • Back to the OP though, I'm in a very similar situation, and have been really torn between getting a £500 car that I can use while I finish learning to actually drive (rather than just learning to pass the test), and spending £1500-£2000 on a much better car.

I keep changing my mind on this, but I know that for the sake of my NCD I would almost certainly not be claiming if I reversed it into my fence post for example, or if it got 'keyed' on the street, and so whilst my £500 car is pretty disposable, upto £2000 is not. Of course I still run the risk of third party claims if I hit someone else, but if they're going to happen it will make little difference what car I'm in!

I am debt averse, and will not take out a finance agreement to get a really nice shiny automobile, but I see what my max budget can get these days, and I'm not that disappointed.

My Dad even had me looking at the Yaris the other day and I found myself thinking "Hmmm...."

OP - One thing that you must keep an eye on, particularly on comparison websites is the level of COMPULSORY excess you will have as an inexperienced driver, on top of any voluntary excess if you have comp cover and a claim. Together they could amount to a higher value than a banger is worth, and so do the maths before you get your comp cover.

  • Have a look on here for an idea of what cars are in the lower groups

Someone I know had a Daewoo Matiz that they loved. Only 800cc but sounds like it would be cheap to insure for first car?

If you are thinking of a Matiz, I suggest you get to see a full service history & all bills with it.

I know some folk swear by them & they are nice wee cars to drive but my ex's father had one & it was a black-hole for repairs & expensive faults.

Seriously, he had to be dissuaded from returning it to the dealer via the showroom window. :(

Like I said be careful with Quinn if you are a learner driver, it will be an expensive lesson to learn. If you want more infor search the forum for details of what theyt do when you pass your test.

I would also advise against doing a 10 month bonus accelorator policy
  • Thanks V-tricky - sounds like we are in the same boat. I would love to get a nicer car but also want to build up the NCD so if I have a banger and I bump it and write it off - no big loss. But the other side of the coin is if I have to keep repairing it all the time I may as well have spent the extra and got a better runner. Ah well willl cross that bridge when I come too it, its great to have all the advice on this advice to refer to though so a big thanks to everyone who has chipped in.

pogofish - that sounds like good advice if I go for a Daewoo, cheers

ps: I like the sound of the 107's now
