The thing is if I get a new/nearly new car wouldn't the insurance go through the roof? I could well prang it just through lack of experience. Wouldn't it be better to get a cheapo car and then look fopr a better model after a few years?
Can you tell me where you got this qoute please as i cant get lower than £1300 for my 17 year old son. Can i ask how old you are please carbon?0 -
Sorry Carbon just saw that you're 30.0

This is a good little tool http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/insure/index.htm
It seems to have a limit on the number of results it brings back so use a couple of the filters at a time. i.e "petrol" "manual" "insurance group" and "engine size"
I'd just work up through the engine sizes and groups (propably up to 1.3 and group 3) until you've found a few cars that you like. Then try some personalised quotes for these cars.0 -

cheers - that's really handy :beer:0 -
If quinn give you a quote be aware than they have one price for a provisional licence holder and then when you ring up to advise them you have passed they increase the premium dramatically. Most other companies do not do this.
So if quinn are the cheapest re run the quote with you holding a full licence to get an idea of how much it will increase to so you can compare it with other insurers

A well looked after Astra , 1.4 or 1.6 petrol , or a 2.0 d (bit of a heavy lump but safe and good for cruising)
V/w/x......£1100 for a looked after one , FSH....BUYERS MARKET !!!
Maybe im bias but i love my astras:D
I love mine too
and the boot size is amazing for the size of car (not on the new design since 2005 where they've turned into a Focus clone). Such a completely practical car.
My 1.6 is only a group 4 so surely a 1.4 would be a group 3(?).
The only thing to think about is the practicality of getting the little one into and out of the back of a little car. I would imagine if you got something three door it'd be a bit of a pain!0 -

That's a good point, my OH mentioned this but I didn't think it would make much difference, maybe she was right (as usual!)0 -
My first car was a 1ltr Toyota Yaris. They are so cheap to run and very low insurance. My insurance was £660 a year fully comp and I was 17 when I got that. Ive just bought my second car and its another 1ltr Yaris. They are great for running around and not too big so great for first time driving. They are quite high up and have a digital screen that tells you exactly what mph you are doing. A 5 door would be better if you have wee ones, as I had a 3dr and it was a pain having to get up and out to let others, in and out.

Thanks I'll look out for them too. Someone I know had a Daewoo Matiz that they loved. Only 800cc but sounds like it would be cheap to insure for first car?0 -
