I'd also be interested in any info on split ticketing between Leeds and London please.
    Keep smiling!
  • I travel weekly from Manchester to London, travelling every Wed morning peak and returning Thurs evening off peak. I used to get advance peak tickets for around £20 single on the Wed but now they are always £77 for the 7.15am train. I have had to change my hours at work because of this to arrive at 11.23 instead of 9.23 due to these horrendous price hikes.

Has anyone got any advice on cheap tickets for peak fares from Manchester to London or any split-ticketing tips for this route? I pay my own fares.
    Many thanks.

There are often cheap tickets available via Sheffield - though I don't know how the times would fit in with your requirement. It's also rather a longer journey.
  • Would someone be able to tell me how to split tickets between Manchester and Dundee? Thank you X

I'd love to know how to get from London or Reading to York as cheaply as possible (I live near Reading but can get to London).

One of the biggest rip-off rail companies now seems to be CrossCountry. They have completely scrapped the availability of Advanced Purchase fares on peak time trains between Leeds and Birmingham. The minimum return fare, if you leave before 9.30 and return during the evening peak, is £84.00, even if you try to book 3 months in advance.

This eyewatering fare can be substantially cut with the following splits for a day return leaving Leeds at 7.05.

    Leeds - Sheffield £10.80
    Sheffield - Derby £17.10
Derby - Birmingham New St £13.70
    Total = £41.60 Saving £42.40

For a 9.10 departure from Leeds the split fare reduces to £32.70, saving £51.30. This is because a cheaper off peak fare becomes available from Sheffield to Derby.

For a period return of more than one day the split ticket fare on the early train is £73.70, saving £10.30.

Out of the peak hours, Advance Purchase fares become available, so check these before splitting. The Off Peak Saver return at £48.90 can clearly be cut with split tickets.

There are no timetabling problems with these splits, all trains on this route stop at Sheffield and Derby.
  • Does anyone know any split ticket routes for the west midlands to durham?
the cheapest fare I can find in over £100!!
Our nearest station is Bloxwich, but Wolverhampton, Walsall and Birmingham are in easy reach, so any routes which can help would be great!!
    Thanks :T

QueenBee, you really must try harder.
It took me all of two minutes to find that I can buy a Advance Single from Blox to Durham for £20.50, leaving Bloxwich at 12:32 on 24 Feb. (You dont say when you want to travel).
A walk up return can be had for £82.50.

    Btw, welcome to the forum.

Have you looked at split ticketting?

You shouldn't need to if you book in advance as NXEC start very low on that route

As an alternative check out Leeds to Sheffield & Sheffield to St Pancras

Book in advance on the NXEC website - there are many cheap fares on the East Coast mainline
