Personally, I'd recommend getting a '3' PAYG handset and using that. IIRC, they charge 3p per minute to any other UK mobile.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

That's exactly what I did - see my comment a few posts before this one (#828)! As Heinz correctly says, 3p/minute to landlines and mobiles so for any non-inclusive calls it's cheaper than 18185 and MUCH cheaper than the 0808 18185 which charges 10p/minute for weekday calls!

I've been successfully using my Orchid V4 for many years using Kevin's programming tool plus your dialling methodology but I'm considering leaving BT for the usual rubbish customer service and over charging reasons. Before I change I thought I'd reprogramme the Orchid to the latest spec but cant download the last? version (1.9) from the MSE site. Do you have any programming advice for a BT line user with Primus Free Talk Plus 2 and 18185. Our broadband (for my wifes business) is with BT but we may change to Plusnet though we cant get any of the MSEs real cheap deals because of our rural location (no competition at our exchange).

    Thanks in advance

  • The truecall box does seem to remember the setting during power outages, but I too have had the prompt to set up greeting message - I also ignore this and use defaults. It also dials a number at power on, I suspect to pick up the time, and this seems to work OK via the Orchid box.

I've just been in contact with BT to modify my options (e.g. removing BT Sport HD and changing my phone call options to free Weekend calls only).

I now need to modify my Lawry Excel program to enable my Orchid dialler to dial the new settings correctly but am at a loss as to how to do this.

Could someone please advise me how, for example, what I would need to change to allow my weekend calls to go through BT but my weekday calls to go through 18185. In particular, what changes are needed to the Pogramming Codes in cells such as D1 which currently shows as
    (=IF(B5="","","*#**" & B5 & "*" & A5)

    Thank you

I'd like to stick with my current router (a modified 2-Wire BT Business Hub) because it supports two hardware VoIP ports which I have phones connected to for use with a couple of Sipgate numbers.

Just did an ebay search for "VOIP Router -adsl" and found a couple of Linksys SPA2102 for about £30 from the states that should let you use 2 x sipgate with cable. Not tried this myself I have a Grandstream voip handset that plugs straight into an ethernet port.

Since my last post on the subject, things have moved on a bit. I was suffering broadband drop-outs which in the end turned out to be my router. Having had my broadband migrated from O2 to Sky I picked up a few Sky routers at my local car boot sale and now have a separate Linksys PAP2-NA VoIP adapter for my two Sipgate numbers.

All works a treat now including WiFi communication between my TV, Sky Box and other devices so I'll stick Sky for now.
When my current BT Line rental saver runs out in December I'll probably move my broadband and phone line rental to Plusnet. I won't bother paying any extra for Unlimited Anytime calls to Landlines because Sipgate is so cheap, it wouldn't be worth it. Unfortunately, I can't remove that option from my current BT calling plan unless I sign up for another 12 months which I don't want to do.

Just having a look at the spreadsheet for the first time in a while, well since I upgraded my PC. Running Excel 2010 on Windows7 64-bit, I now get a "Compile Error" when I enable the macros.

Has anyone managed to run it on 64-bit, and if so, what do I need to do?

[Edit]After some searching, I've managed to get it working by adding "PtrSafe" in the Function Declarations, so "Declare Function ..." became "Declare PtrSafe Function ...". No idea what that does, but I hope it generates the right output [/Edit]

You don't change any of the cells which have a beige background. Only change cells which have a white background - the content in other cells will be calculated appropriately.

Assuming that Carrier Code 1 is for 18185, and your default carrier (carrier code 0) is BT, the Day/Night/Weekend columns would contain 1, 1, 0. This would route through 18185 for day calls, through 18185 for evening calls and through BT for weekend calls.

Don't forget to make the appropriate entries on the 'Main' page and on the 'config' page to programme the proper transitions from day to evening and weekend.
