That should work. The fact that you are getting that BT announcement suggests you are dialling out on the BT line with the digits 88 (i.e. programming the Orchid has not worked).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

That's what was concerning me. When I've tried to program the Orchid I've not heard any tones from my laptop, but I've seen the red LED illuminate on the Orchid as each line was sent. On the other hand, if I get the spreadsheet to dial the 1471 test number I hear the tones and the BT response.

Am I using the spreadsheet correctly? Click on 'Dial Carrier Code Table', let it run, click on 'Dial Routing Tables' and let it run?

Yes, and you should see a pop-up window showing you which carrier or routing code is being dialled (I hear them too).

If you're not hearing the tones, but do hear them when you do a 1471 test, try getting a single cell to be sent using the Dial Single Table Entry button at the top right.

I've used the Dial Single Table button and have seen the Orchid's LED glow but haven't heard any tones. Trying the Dial Test Number again, I've heard the tones and the BT response.

OK. I have no idea why your modem is doing that but the lack of audio and the BT message appear to prove no programming is taking place. All is not lost though.

Manual programming (using a telephone's DTMF keypad instead of the modem plugged into the Orchid) may sound laborious but it's generally a one-time thing after which you'll just have to update carriers code(s) or routing rule(s) occasionally.

So, enter the programming string for your new carrier (your mobile's number) and then the new routing rule to bar dialling it and test 88 again.

OK, thanks, I'll give the manual method a go.

Before I do that, could you clarify something for me please? I was with TalkTalk and so had 1280 set to send some calls through BT. However, I've cancelled TalkTalk and moved my calls back to BT (though 99.99% will be on my mobile rather than the landline!). Do I just set calls to use carrier code '0' for the times I want to use BT? In the 'as supplied' spreadsheet, can I just clear carrier codes two to five and perhaps move my mobile test to carrier code 2? I have 1899 set as carrier code 1 for any weekday and international calls I might make.

    Thanks again for your help!

Yes, Carrier 0 (which doesn't appear on the spreadsheet) is your default carrier so that's BT for you now. The 1280 prefix is, of course, superfluous for you now but it is just ignored by BT anyway.

You could certainly simplify your program by having just 1899 as Carrier 1 and your test mobile as Carrier 2.

    *#**1899*1
    *#**07890123456*2

Your test Translation rule would then be:

    *###88#5222#29#

I've just taken on a Virgin Media phone - it's almost impossible not to if you want the TV package.
I've also just downloaded the latest version of the marvellous spreadsheet and I noticed a code 08081703703#####named "call 18185 cable".
If I use this can I get to 18185 from a Virgin phone?
I know that Virgin don't allow override codes @cos I asked them.

Yes, call charges differ from those which those able to use the 18185 prefix would pay, but a great saving on many Virgin rates nevertheless.

    Hi All,

I'm currently on the following setup:

BT line, o2 broadband, 18185 use and orchid v4.

If I change to o2 as my home phone line provider, will I be able to use my v4 as is, or, will I be able to reprogram changing the 18185 prefix to their 0808 1 703 703 and a few pauses or will it not work whatever I do as o2 don't allow the 18185 service at all?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum section, I wasn't sure of which thread to use.
