  • Got my monthly BT bill today & from the total and call breakdown, it certainly appears that the calls have not been going through the dialler.

I've also recently had o2 broadband which goes through the BT line & I'm pretty sure I've got everything plugged in correctly.

As yet I've never quite sussed how to use a modem to update or change the dialler settings, so have always done it manually.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

Nine times out of ten, it's the day/date/time setting.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Think I've managed to suss out how to use Kevin's spreadsheet. How can I see whether the dialler has updated fully?

You can't see as such although, if you're using the modem method, you can watch (on your computer screen) and listen (on your computer's speakers) to each carrier, routing rule etc. being sent.

I also insert my own mobile number as an additional carrier (7) and an additional routing rule making the dialling of the digits 88 to be translated to use carrier 7 at all times.

If the download is successful, dialling 88 rings my mobile! Simples!

My 'special' routing rule is rule number 33 and is programmed with the string:

    * # # 88 # 5 7 7 7 # 33 #

Just a couple of quick questions which I know Heinz will know the answers to! ;)

    1. I understand what Heinz does with the 'Rule 33' setting to ensure that the tables have been updated, logically you dial 88 and it 'should' call your own mobile if all has gone well. When you program the dialler are the old tables deleted completely before being updated or is there a chance that old settings could be retained if there was a problem in the update?

    2. I use the standard BT/Primus/18185 set-up but I think I have the 'Penny Mobile 2' option which was previously available from Primus which gives 20min for 20p. I see the rules route all 07 calls to 18185 so if I wanted to use the PM2 option how do I override the rule?

    3. Looking at rule #10 I notice that all 07 calls go to 18185 during the week but are routed to their cable number during the weekend. Why is this different for weekends? Is it to satisfy BT's call requirements they are routed via the CPS override rule?

Apologies if any have been asked before, I've had a scour through the thread but may have missed some!

    Thanks.

    1. Carrier Codes and Routing Rules overwrite previous ones so, if you're doing a full reprogram rather than amending an individual programming string, only if you reduce the number of either is there likely to be a problem (if your new program is 24 Routing Rules but your previous one had 25, Rule 25 from then old program will remain active).

    2. My position exactly. Penny Mobile 2 is your default Carrier (Carrier 0) so just keying the dialler override code (121) as a prefix sends the call via Penny Mobile 2. In fact, as the minimum cost using 18185 is 11p (5p + 6p) anyway, it's not often I don't use the 121 prefix when calling a mobile.

    3. No, it's simply so as to keep calls to mobiles at 6p/minute at the weekend (bizarrely, using the 18185 prefix means 6p/minute weekday and 7p/minute weekend prices whereas using the 08081703703 gateway number means 10p/minute weekday and 6p/minute weekend prices).

  • Have used kevin's spreadsheet via modem, however, when I used my fone today, I didn't get the 0p a minute voice. Think my dialler is broken.

Thanks for all the efforts thus far.

I've just downloaded the latest table after coming off the end of a Sky contract as my CPS and was wondering who is the CPS for the new table values? It looks like you have set 0 for your 01 evening calls, but on the MSE site I can't see who is giving free evening calls. Primus et al all seem to be doing free weekend calls only.

    Thanks.

It was written when Primus was the recommendation but is equally effective for those on BT's Unlimited Evening & Weekend calls plan (free if you agree to the 'renewable' 12 month contract of £2.99/month otherwise IIRC).

However, it depends, as ever, on use. £2.99 would pay for 60 calls via 18185 so, if you make less than that number in the evening each month, changing the program to send evening Local, 01, 02 and 03 calls via 18185 is an option.

Just bumping this query up :)
