  • Are these LCRs still available? It seems that orchid just sell 'eco' dect phones these days.

Are the various Zoom devices a suitable alternative?

I think you are referring to a completely different company.

Although it appears Orchid LR4620 low radiation phones can still be purchased from other sources (at least one of which - see HERE - shows 'Orchid Telecom Ltd' as part of the online graphics), the Orchid Telecom which used to sell Orchid diallers (www.orchid-telecom.com) now has a permanent divert set up so that those attempting to access its old website (click that link and you'll see) reach their new website (the incongruously-named www.smallbusinesstelephonesystemsuk.co.uk) and, as will be quickly obvious, now deals exclusively with business telephony equipment.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

So basically these devices are no longer available, unless i can pick one up s/h somewhere? Is there anything equivalent that can be used?

I'm afraid that is correct. There's no replacement I know of so second hand is the only option.

ebay might be a possible source or, of course, you could keep your eye on posts in the Orchid discussion thread (post #814 might be a good place to start).

It appears it might be possible to do the same thing with an AVM Fritz!box - out of the box it supports simple routing between a VoIP port/FXO port based on dialled string, but there are addons that take this and enable digit manipulation and time related routing. The problem is that the documentation on all of this is all in german. Being a user who hasn't posted much I can't post urls, but if you search for 'Fritz!box LCR' on google you should find something,
  • When dialling 0844 numbers using the dialler, I'm getting a message telling me I'm using a service which does not support these numbers and then it hangs up. The only way I can use these numbers is to un-plug the dialler and plug my phone direct into the BT box.

I have tried manually updating the dialler using Kevin's spreadsheet, but when telephoning the 0844 number again, I'm still getting the same message.

    Any ideas?

Only if Routing Rule 14 routes 0844 calls via Carrier Code 1 (i.e. inserts the 18185 prefis) should that announcement be heard (Routing Rule 14 routes 0844 calls via carrier 3 at all times i.e. uses the 1280 prefix to override CPS and send them via BT).

All I can suggest is manually re-entering both Routing Rule 14 and Carrier Code 3. The keying sequences are below.

    *###0844#3333#14#

    *#**1280*3

I'm a little out of the loop for 0844 charges but surely you could dial 121 to override the Orchid box, then dial the 0844 number - that way you wouldn't need to unplug the dialler - which causes its clock to forget the date & time and you'd need to reset it.

When you say you used Kevin's spreadsheet to manually update, did you use a modem or did you type all the commands in by hand on your telephone?

Are you having problems with any other call types or just 0844?
  • I type the commands in by hand. Don't know how to use the modem method.
  • Use Heinz's suggested programming above and you will be fine in future assuming your Orchid is otherwise programmed correctly.

Do reset your clock though if you ever unplug it - use Kevin's spreadsheet & press F9 to update the programming string with the current time.

As I mentioned above, if you ever need to bypass the Orchid's routing, dial 121 then the number you require. A good reason for doing this would be if the 18185 service becomes temporarily unavailable or you really do want to waste money and dial an 09 number!
