How can I promote (outside of Ebay) a very special item I am selling on Ebay?

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can promote an extremely special one-off item that I am selling on Ebay? I am talking along the lines of getting people in the media or related trades talking about it.

Obviously this is for personal gain only as the more talkers, the more viewers, the more potential bidders and hopefully a higher price! So ultimately I am asking about extra marketing. (I already know about the extras available on Ebay, eg, front page etc)

any ideas - anyone done this before?

If it is a collectable item then maybe there is a collecting group, or online community that might let you advertise the sale?

If it is just a one off novelty item you might try phoning the press, but I think they only carry ebay stories when other news is short and I'm sure they're fed up of a lot of the novelty items already. Anything big, but not in the novlety arena, like a jet plane could again be bought to the attention of air craft museums or such like.

Wherever your likely buyers are, that's where to target, general things though will be harder to advertise.

Also, be careful on any website or collectors groups and talk to the mods before mentioning your item as virtually ever group I am on bans ebay adverts and you wouldn't want to run into problems.

lastly, try chatting on the dedicated ebay forums, you can get to them from the ebay front page.

Have you already got it on ebay if so whats the item number?

I guess it comes down to what the item is and how much it is worth as to where and how you publicise it!

We are talking about a total one off concept vehicle (as in number one of one quantity made!) and if you saw it your jaw would drop I assure you ;)

At the end of the day though it's only a glorified LDV pick-up and an expensive one at that.
