I've been made redundant

I was made redundant on Thursday,
It was a voluntary redundancy:rolleyes:, sounds daft to accept it
but as I had been there under a year I wasn't entitled to any pay out
So by taking it I got 4 weeks notice pay and 4 weeks pay and holiday pay
If I didn't take the voluntary i would have been working my notice and miss out on 4 weeks pay
A few links to some sites that have been useful
Checked to see what benifits I can claim

If you are on contribution based JSA you do not automatically get free preescriptions and other free health costs
, you need to fill in a form called HC1 (available from Job Centre Plus office and other benefits offices)

If you get made redundant, call your mortgage provider any loans or credit companys and tell them what has happened, they are more likely to be sympathetic and helpfull if you inform them, rather than wait until you start missing payments
Pay the priority bills first
Rent/ mortgage (rent you can get houseing benifit, see note below)
Council Tax (you can claim Council Tax Benifits)
TV Liscence
Gas /Electric/Water
Food
If you are needing Propper Debt advice use these
Non-profit Debt Counsellors' List
Never pay for free debt advice
If you have debts and get a lump sum maybe not enough to clear all debts, and leave a bit of "emergancy" money, maybe "snowballing" debts might be the right option,, "snowballing" is paying off the highest APR debt first, and minmum payments on the rest, then the money used to pay off that debt (when itsgone) is added to the next highest debt, and so on,

A note about claiming Houseing and Council Tax benefit, you can and should fill in the application forms when first registering,
And then go to your local Housing Benefit office and fill them in there aswell, "belt and Braces" is an old saying that comes to mind, it took nearly 2 months to get mine sorted, I only did the form at job centre

Just to pick up on that, if you have paid enough contributions you should be able to get Conts Based JSA straight away, but entitled to doesn't make that clear (it assumes you have already claimed it). You don't have to wiat til you are out of your notice period is over if you were paid in leiu of it0 -

I'm about 7 weeks into my 10 weeks notice period, some reps from various depts in DWP came to see us at work as thre was over 30 of us all being made redundant late Dec 2008, they told us that if you have been released from work? are in your notice period, you are eligible to clain JSA from the very first day that you are no longer working, this is what I did, I left work on the 18th Dec, just entered my 10 week notice period (I had worked there for over 10yrs) and with my 10yrs of redundancy money, 10 weeks PILON and holiday pay owed? I signed on the dole, 10 days later I had some money from JSA in the bank.

Sorry to hear your news Numpty. I know I've chatted to you on DFW.
Good advice you've given. I got made redundant in August after 12 years with my company so I did get a bit of redundancy pay but as my salary wasn't massive, I didn't get enough to clear all my debts (scary!). However, have made some headway but want to keep some money back in case I can't get work.
Since October, I've been temping for the same agency in the same company, but such is the nature of temp work, I could go at any time so need money to live on and I don't have much left! I've not been reckless with it - just cleared some debts and paying mortgage etc.
Good luck with your search!Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free

Unless it's changed since I was made redundant you can't get paid JSA (including contribution based) until your notice period is over if you have been paid 'in lieu of notice'. You can (or could) go and register with them straight away though. I was able to access a 'group' that helped you with cv's and interview techniques whilst I was still in notice period.

Hi DID
Hope you get something soon:A
I got made redundant before about 5 years ago , and got the minimum government payout then, for 14 years working there
1 week pay (based on the basic pay) per year
12 weeks in lieu of notice (taxed) and any benefits claimed taken from that:mad:
Wish I had found MSE back then:o
