  • Hi all

My son was made redundant on Friday. He and all his colleagues were told to go home as the company had gone bust.

He will get nothing from the company, not pay owed, overtime owed or holiday outstanding.

He has completed a form to get about £450 redundancy pay from the government and had to list all the money owed to him - but heaven knows when this will come through.

He applied for JSA on the telephone - but is concerned about how much he will get - he has a fiancee and a child and another on the way! They are in rented accommodation and have no debts except a bank loan for a car which they are over half way through.

I have advised him to open another bank account to have his benefits paid into so the bank will not take it to pay loan but what should he do about his loan? Should he ask for a payment hol - does anyone know what Natwest are like for this or should he just offer them £1 a month until he can get more work.

Firms are closing down here left, right and centre and none seem to be recruiting. We are just outside Bristol and he was working in the motor trade. He has just finished his NVQ3 so at least he did complete that and just waiting for certs.

Sorry to go on but I am so worried - he is only 22. He seems to be coping but I know that he is scared. He wants to provide for his family.

    Hi Hermoine

The government pay thing is not the quiest thing in the world,,or it wasn't

He Should get any pay owed, Chances of that getting on his due pay date,
he is also entilted to pay in lieu of notice, outstanding accrued holiday pay which i think is taxed. and statutury redundancy pay
    this calc might help

Use the entitled to calc for a rough idea of what benefits he could get

You've done the right thing with getting him to open a new bank account

It is best to phone the loan company and explain to them they might accept a payment holiday, or lower paymentsthere is no guarntee they will but you never know, and a lot depends if it i a secured loan

I was in the motor buisness aswell

I am confused. I understand that you can claim JSA for 6 months. Is that 6 months from the date you lose your job or for 6 months in total from when you claim. For example if I lost my job 2 months ago and claimed now would I be eligable for 6 or 4 months worth? I am unsure. Thanks guys.

  • Thank you Numpty, I cannot work out how much he is entitled to as he has to do a joint claim with his partner but she cannot work due to pregnancy. Benefits people say she has to be looking for work but realistically who would employ her!

Just have to wait til 19th when he goes to sign on and then they will calculate how much he will get to keep 3 of them on.

All I can say from what I have seen so far - How do some people make a career out of claimiing, it is not enough to keep body and soul together!

Hope it goes well for them, and I think it's discrimination about pregnant women

Was it a mistake on their part? or are you really going to see them Sunday?? lol............I'm curious now........let me know how it goes, I'm happy to report that your positive vibes must have rubbed off on me as I started a new job Wed this week, pays no where as good as my last job, but it get's me out of the house, pays the bills and uses someone else's heating and electricity .......that will be fine till the market picks up again (whenever that might be )
