still unsure which lens i need if i buy the D50
    help plzzzzzzzzzzz

What do you want to do with the lens?

I've got a sigma 18-200, which does the job for me. However I understand the 18-70 Nikkor lens is supposed to be very, very good. However that lens is pretty expensive, you might as well get the D70s because it comes with the 18-70 lens as standard.

I bought the Sigma lens for about £180 (but in HK) and sold the kit lens for £80.

My advice, get the D50 at the £400 price, which is a very good price for it. Use the kit lens for a bit, see how you get on with it. If you like it, well and good, if you don't, sell it and get a better lens.

  • that sounds like cracking advice,i am only a novice after all so best start simple and build from there,i guess i could sell the basic lens via ebay and get a really cracking one if i need to later.
Do you edit your photos or just print straight away?
finally what memory card wud u suggest for this.

    Thanks a lot

I normally edit the photos. The bundled software is a bit poor with Nikon. I use Adobe now, but there are several great freeware packages avaiable (do a searh on the boards here, as someone else was asking about that recently).

Memory card. I have a 1GB (and a 512MB as backup). Make sure whatever size you get (I would say at least 1GB) its high speed. This is important, especially as you want to take sports shots.

Re the £609 price, which Sigma lens is it?

  • its a Nikon D50 + 18-200 Sigma lens,not sure of the company mind u

really tempted now but not sure where is the best and safest for this kinda money, maybe amazon is best bet!
What type of photos do u take, are the results good and is the camera complicated for a novice like me?

Think about, you can get the camera with the kit lens for £400. The Sigma lens is about £240 retail. I would still get the kit lens and camera for £400 and then buy a better lens later.

In terms of photos I take general shots to tell you the truth, when I go on holiday, etc.

For a novice it is a very good camera. Excellent starter SLR camera. Simple to use, very fast start up.

  • I got my D50 from boots yesterday. I got in during that two days that they had the 10% off all stock. Plus I used the 10% discount code and got 4.5% cashback from Quidco. Plus I also got 2000 boots points. So I effectively got the D50 with the lens for £382 plus another £20 in points to spend in boots. Although I've forgotten to go into the store to collect them and I ordered it last Thursday evening. Does that mean I won't get the points? Because it says something about having to go into the store with 5 days to collect them.

Also, if I want a better lens eventually will I really be able to get £80 for the one that I got on ebay?

Amazing camera by the way. It feels perfect in the hand. Not too big and not too small.

you'll still get the points. I think the 5 days is 'how long it might take to appear on machine' time.
*really* want to upgrade to a DSLR but I need to offload my fuji f7000 first. not had it long, but it doesn't do what I want (can't tell if macros are properly in focus - although very good 2cm macro if you can guess if it's in focus)
