The financial crisis gripping world markets is "the worst in human history" and we are only just beginning to feel the fallout, the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England has warned.

moanymoany the media are making a meal of all this  they don`t care that they are making people depressed as though going into the winter gloom wasn`t bad enough.

We CAN cope. If it gets really really tight then try and keep the very essential outgoings like mortgage and do what we have been learning about for 2 1/2 years. If necessary keep the inner warmth with porridge and thick soups and then wrap up (head too) so that the warmth stays around us. Get people into 1 room with the door shut. This gloom and doom makes me so mad, the media should be offering survival tips to the ORDINARY person, not to m/s new 4 wheeled juganaut, about how to buy cheaper makeup etc. The meals they are doing on the tv are stupid for a recession and so is much of their so called advice

    Keep your chin up moanymoany

ps: we have about another 18 months to go before the upturn. Less time than this thread has been running. We can and will survive

I think all of the ladies who started this thread off are heroines. To me, the main weapon is ATTITUDE and the secondary one is COMMONSENSE and if ever anybody runs short of those things, come in here and get a free refill!!:)

    Hi people

What the economists forget is a very basic value that is going to see all of us here not only cope, but possibly thrive in the face of recession, credit crunch and other nasties: Sense of community.

I am sure that people here on this forum are the sort of people who, like in the forum, will pull together in their own local communities for mutual help, support, comfort, fun and worthwhile activities.

    I am not scared.

  • i agree with Kittie about all the media hype, every day i turn my tv onto another Credit Crisis Headline, we all know that times are getting hard but to have it every time some news comes on is depressing.
I wish they would encourage more mse ways and make it fun and happy instead of how many people will loose their jobs, lose their houses, go bankrupt ect ect. I know we need to know but every news hour every day?

There should mse cookery shows to promote less waste and cooking from scratch, mse ways of making it stretch further, sewing programmes to show how to adapt existing clothes, ways to keep warm without hefty bills, programmes to show ways to look after those most vunerable, there should be alot more positive spin put on it because we will cope, we have mse to help us - what about those who don't???

What will I do if times get harder? I am already cooking from scratch alot more, I will cut back on my luxuries such as cinema, going out, top of the range food and expensive dog food.
    Love a charity shop bargain

To rub salt in, we booked to go fungi foraging and there wasn`t a single edible fungi about. Not one, mother earth must be getting so fed up with the way humankind treats her

I am also wondering if so many people on here are so cheerful in difficult circumstances because they have turned off a lot of the stuff that causes electrosmog. Maybe we are now living in atmospheres that are better for us. Just a thought ;)

I do wonder whether foraging - of any description - aint what it used to be because there's a lot more people foraging these days on the one hand and a lot less "wild" land available for wild food to grow on for the foraging on the other hand....I have the suspicion that things are going a bit "short" on that front as one of the side-effects of Britain (in common with a lot of other countries) just having way too many people ...well we certainly have at least twice as many as the country can "support" comfortably. I do understand where you are coming from though with your comment about Mother Earth getting fed up with the way humanity treats her.....I do feel that most people's attitude is thoroughly "disrespectful".....as it boils down to "I'll grab all the resources I want, drive all I want, have all the children I want, litter the place up as much as I want....etc.....etc....etc" - so I can thoroughly sympathise. There is just one snag on the Gaia idea - the main proponent of it (ie James Lovelock) clearly doesnt believe in it himself (if his 8 children and owning acres of land personally has anything to do with it)...How....how....how...how can he say that Gaia should only have 1.5 billion people living on her and have EIGHT of his own (errr....at the last count there is approx 6.7 billion attempting to live on this Planet!!!!  ).

Re the electrosmog - did read the other day that the Government is still debating the best way to "read" these SmartMeters for electric they want us all to have soon - and one of the methods thats possible is "wireless" (think thats t'word) - rather than via cable ....ie more electrosmog generation...... There was a little side comment too about our "consumption" being able to be regulated externally in times of high demand......errr....correct me if I'm wrong...but I interpreted that as meaning that when there is high surges of "demand" for power from our powerstations that it could be decided - by someone other than myself!!!!!! - to adjust my use of high power-using appliances...ie my heating....they wouldnt....errr....would they....they couldnt ....errrr...could they? WHAT!!!!!!!!! That cant be right ----er,,,can it?

Well....put it this way.....there does seem to be a lot more postings about redundancy-related questions on the Employment Forum these days and a lot more complaints about employers "trying it on" in one way or t'other in the way they treat their staff ditto.

I hear on Radio 4 the price of electric and gas is going to go up again this winter despite the drop in oil prices (these are set to shoot back up thanks to the cartel!)

As a previous comment, time to defrost the freezer and stock up from Aldi/Lidl!
