Re the electrosmog - did read the other day that the Government is still debating the best way to "read" these SmartMeters for electric they want us all to have soon - and one of the methods thats possible is "wireless" (think thats t'word) - rather than via cable ....ie more electrosmog generation......
I got one of those free from my electricity company. Probably much less electromagnetic radiation than a light bulb. Bloomin' thing is worthless though, apart from telling you what you already know. It shows how much per day/month you would be charged for what you are running right now. Even with oven and dishwasher on at the same time it doesn't show anything like the amount we actually spend per month. Most of the time it registers very little. Apparently a 60W bulb does not use 60W. The novelty with this thing wore off in a day or two. Would prefer one which measures the consumption by each appliance. No need for the radio signal.
Speaking of radio signals I am going to help my neighbour fix her cordless doorbell because whenever someone calls at the house across the road, they both rush to the front door. :rotfl:(Same wavelength signal)
I interpreted that as meaning that when there is high surges of "demand" for power from our powerstations that it could be decided - by someone other than myself!!!!!! - to adjust my use of high power-using appliances...ie my heating....
1kwh of electricity is currently four times the price of 1kwh of gas, so if you have a choice gas is the better option for now. Heating is the biggest gobbler of fuel, so the most likely to be rationed, at the least convenient times, like in the evenings when we all need it.
I am waiting with interest to see if the usual idiots have their annual competitions to outdo each other with Christmas lights on their houses. Our TV regional news even goes out and films them. What is the point of those displays when you can't even see your own because you are inside the house
If it's 'for the kiddies' I hope the 'kiddies' still appreciate the gesture when they are trying to light and heat their own homes and the fossil fuels have almost run out.0 -
Have been out all day and got back to the happy news about recession- as if most of us had not already guessed!
DD(23)now has a new winter coat at a reasonable price that is sensible and warm - other DD(19) got one a couple of weeks ago and DD(14) got one a week ago so nearly everyone is sorted out.
I found a Wilkinsons and had a look for a 32cm shallow fry pan that I could use as a spare for the Remoska but they did not have one.
The charity shop no longer has the oil lamp!!!!! I waited till DH was out of the way so I could smuggle it home this morning - and now its not there!!!!
Has anyone any ideas where I could buy one other than just try all the charity shops that I can think of in the area?
Decided to make a huge pot of lentil soup tomorrow and a large HM loaf and try to convince DH to take me to Lidl."This site is addictive!"

Evening all
Welcome back Kittie you've been missed but we kept the thread warm for you
I wish that when they report the doom and gloom they would follow it up with some sort of 'but here's a few things you can do to help yourselves out' tips..no such luck it's gloom,gloom,gloom..
I've noticed a lot more 'help I've/OH has been made redundant' threads too Ceridwen, very sad for those involved and when I had a look in the houseprice bit there's already people on there with negative equity..I know how that felt when we had it in the 90's
Caterina you're right a sense of community does help get you through the toughest of times
Mardatha lol I've got attitude..just not sure if it's the right sort
lil_me now don't mention the R word I've been avoiding reading certain threads that contain news about that (while wondering if I could fit one in my kitchen too...)0 -
Where do you go for certain MSE type foods - like Pasta, tinned tomatoes, meatballs and sauce, root veg etc etc
I usually shop at ASDA but there is an Aldi near me i want to venture into this month and also a Lidl not far. Oh there is also a Heron Foods and a small Iceland nearby. Is it worth getting things from different supermarkets?
Sarah xxxDFW Total £21,800 to clear by Dec 2022
MFW Total £184,950 £179,066 to clear by 20350 -
Happytails - definitely worth shopping around I think. I don't have a Lidl or Aldi very near to me but am lucky enough to have Tesco and Morrisons very close by. Last week I realised Tesco value pasta and spaghetti had pretty much doubled in price, so went across the road to Morrisons where theirs had not gone up so I stocked up just in case. The supermarkets need a little healthy competition to stop the prices getting too silly.0

Hi everyone, just thought I'd say hello.
Happytails- I usually get my shopping at tescos. I've been doing it online most of this year and that helps me to just stick to a shopping list.
Tomorrow I'm going to pop into Farmfoods, as they have a lot of cheap stuff. I'm not sure of their prices just now, but I know their milk etc used to be the cheapest in our town.0 -
Hi Angelite
I love farmfoods but the parking is a nightmare at our one so can't drag OH there often enough:mad: shame as they're really cheap!
Happytails I've shopped in Tesco's ever since I left home which is um..*scary* years ago...just recently though I do go to other stores if they have bargains listed and I also buy a few bulky bits online from Wilkinsons (great tip from lil_me cleaning stuff etc is often so much cheaper)You can usually find a code for them here and use quidco too!!
Motherkitty I saw the pasta in Sainsburys had doubled too:eek: Luckily I started reading an american site a few years ago and they are really clued up to commodity prices etc soooo I stocked up on pasta, rice, oils, corn, flours and sugarwhich was quite handy seeing as these are all the things which the prices have gone through the roof on!
I also stocked up on cereals and stuff that was made in most part from these thingsIt has saved us a small fortune and I still have um plenty

we are off out for the day, helping my dd move. Toddler minding and lots of shifting and carrying  also travelling and no doubt will get the aches and pains back. I have got the ibruprofen ready on the bedside table. They will never know though as we do these things to help
I just ordered a couple of bags of soya mince, organic of course as I`m not eating the GM stuff, no way. It will mean lots of disguising but hey I can do itI used to use it loads when the children were small but I did get through quite a lot of chutneys and strong sauces too. A bit of warning re some of the properties though: it is an oestrogen mimic so I wouldn`t serve it to boys and to men who are wanting babies in the future. Ok with us as my we are way past that stage :rotfl: :rotfl: Then again, it might be what some of the population need. A bit more femininity in the male sex. Give em soya and a duster and get them cooking :T

Errr....Kittie....I did read summat somewheres recently re eating too much soya (and "too much" wasnt that much at all) being a bit of a predisposer to Alzheimers....whoops.....now thinking in terms of using up the tofu in freezer at a cautious meal per fortnight rate or summat..... Tend to work on the basis that everything else seems to be "up for grabs" and nowt I can do about it.....the looks are definitely heading "down the pan" - dammit! (I was never beautiful - but I was attractive once.....oh well.....at least the plus side of that is its easier to be unobtrusive when I want, now I've reached the "age of invisibility") - but my mind.....now that stays with me regardless...dont want any threats to that;)
D&DD - you ARE doing well clearing that debt. Looking at your signature - you've cleared about £33,000 in 2 years 10 months - good going! Well done you.0 -

Well that's me going do-lally then because I've been a vegetarian all my life and have eaten soya products about three times a week since I was 13.I'm now going on 54.My hubby has had the same for the past 37 years and we also have soya milk daily.
I hope you ladies will tell me when you think I'm starting to act a little strange.0
