Well unfortunately, things have just got tougher for us. DH had to have 3 days off work last week with an infected bite and then yesterday he went back to work and ended up coing home with red, swollen, blistered leg. Long story short, he is now in hospital with cellulitus. Apparently, I have been told it can take a while to recover from. The point is that he doesn't get paid while he isn't working. He can claim SSP directly from DSS but this is not much. I don't really know how we are going to manage TBH.

I had to ring my bank today to see if I could temporarily increase my overdraft and I had a nice chat on the phone with a chap (such lovely people at First Direct). He said that I deserved a medal for managing to survive on JSA and HB with no other income (I am not disabled enough for DLA despite being partially sighted:mad: ).

I am incredibly skint at the mo so I did spare some change today to buy some essentials - bread and milk. Bread was on offer at my local shop - 2 large Warbartons loaves for £2 and now I have 4 small ones in my freezer:j Having bread means toast, sandwiches and as a special treat a bread n butter pudding or even a savoury bread n butter pudding made with cheese and sliced tomato`

I don't need to go shopping for a while now as I have lots of soup in my store cupboard and my freezer is full of meat, veg and pizza (thank you Lidl).

I only have electricity in my flat, so I never put the heating on, I just put on extra layers and a woolly hat if its really cold. I have invested in a Remoska and use that for most of my cooking backed up with my microwave. Anything to save money.

Oh and when I spoke to the chappie at the bank this morning, I told him all about MSE.

Sammy, check in with the CAB they might be able to advise if you're entitled to anything else whilst your DH recovers. Also if your council tax is paid over 10 months rather than 12, then call them and ask if you can pay it over 12 keep the bills down a little. All the best.

  • Hi sammyjig, sorry to hear about what is happening with you, and I do hope your husband is better soon and that you are able to have some help to manage. I remember a few years ago when my husband took ill and he had no pay either for a few months and it was very hard for us indeed. Best wishes to all your family Margaret xx

this happened to us several times too due to DHs heart condition, unfortunately it resulted in us getting itno debt but this was before I discovered MSE - I often think I could have coped so much better if I knew then what I know now.

  • omg I am getting tears in my eyes again. First reading about Sammy-kaye and her need for wellies and now the posts above. I wish we lived closer together in a real community with a small community room so that we could at least share food with each other

At least we know how not to waste things Kittie. Youngest (teenager) was told by doctor to smarten up her diet and he basically said I have his sympathy as we're trying to feed her sensibly. Roll on that meal time and I made sweet and sour chicken and boiled rice, lots of veggies to pad out the chicken and what did she do, picked out all the veg and chucked it in the bin and then asked if she could have crisps as she was hungry!!!! Why do most kids today even when taught otherwise, think money grows on trees? Is it the media that gives them this impression? Sorry guys rant over, just sick of the waste when I'm trying to do my best.

    ????

This made me laugh :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I assume you mean the choccie biccys are a smaller box ?:rotfl:

    Shaz

LOL - no I see your point though!

The small pack is of ordinary biscuits is £1 ...the bigger pack - all choccie is £1.29 I think...and they do a humongous great box of the ordinary ones for £2.45

£1 shop where not everything is £1 LOL!

    Regards

    Kate
  • Sammy - hope your OH makes a speedy recovery and is back ont eh mend soon. I know tis not nice when you get an unexpected shock like that - had a similiar incident year before last - my boyfriend woke up completely blind in one eye - he looked like someone had wedged a tennis ball in teh socket - cue him off work for 5 months, surgery and now lots of on going treatment that hes still undergoing - now hes back on the transplant list and being a guinea pig for new medications. Things will pick up - hes back at work now but it was rough goign for a long time - he wasnt incapacitated enough for disability and because he left his job (due to going blind - he was a motorbike mechanic - he wasnt eligable for job seekers) - i hope things pick up for you chicky and we are here if you need to whinge, whine, and scream.

Kittie - i know i sometimes wish we had our own little MSE village - think about how nice it would be - lots of snuggly houses with no heating, lots of crafting, a real sense of community, lots of own veg and crop growings, mass cooking days - it would be our own little civilisation in the middle of nowhere - although i am not eating weezls pig head for nothing!
    Time to find me again
