I am of the opinion that if you can afford to pay you should, but I do have an issue with the way free school meals are provided. It shouldn't be obvious to everyone who is on free school meals and who isn't. I remember when I was at high school and in receipt of free meals us free meals were totally stigmatised. To get our meal we had to stand in a queue to get a token while the rest of the school filed past us getting their meal. Once we had collected our token we moved onto the dinner queue so we were always last to get our meal had the dregs of the dinners and limited choice. Our friends who weren't on free school meals had nearly finished their meal by the time we got to sit down with ours so there was an element of segregation and social stratification. It still annoys me now that we were treated like second class citizens  so I believe that no child should be marked out because they are in receipt of free school meals.
As for people over 65 receiving free tv licence I'd rather the money was spent on ensuring the poorest over 65s have enough money to heat their home and eat. The rising costs of energy and food is really going to hit the poorest hardest and the old and sick are particularly vulnerable.
Its not good you felt like that. I had school meals when I was small and I wasnt subject to that. At first you may think its not acceptable. but imagine if you had to pay for a meal and you were left to last and had less of a choice that would be worse. i am not having a go but i think to have free school meals is really lucky. I remember when I was at high shool most of my friends had a dinner ticket and the rest of us were jealous - well those with homemade sarnies lol.
Where I live when on benefits you get access to leisure giving you 75% off things such as theatre, gym etc and when I was on benefits I went to see a play. If you had an access to leisure card you had to wait until all the payers had paid and got the best seats, I felt second class at the time, but if we are only paying say 3.00 instead of 15.00 i wouldnt really expect anything else. I would not have been given the opportunity at the time. All my views are just that and do not constitute legal advice in any way, shape or form.£2.00 savers club - £20.00 saved and banked (got a £2.00 pig and not counted the rest)Joined Store Cupboard Challenge]0 -
Well unfortunately, things have just got tougher for us. DH had to have 3 days off work last week with an infected bite and then yesterday he went back to work and ended up coing home with red, swollen, blistered leg. Long story short, he is now in hospital with cellulitus. Apparently, I have been told it can take a while to recover from. The point is that he doesn't get paid while he isn't working. He can claim SSP directly from DSS but this is not much. I don't really know how we are going to manage TBH.
Sorry to hear your husband is ill sammyj I had cellulitis a few years ago, and yes, it does take a while to clear. I had to go into hospital and while they were running tests they found out I was very anaemic, which meant I had little resistance to infection (they said).
As others have already said please make sure that there are no grants or anything that will help until hubby can return to work, surely there must be help for you somewhere. Will keep my fingers crossed for you.The more I see of men, the more I love dogs - Madame de Sevigne0 -

Sammyjig - so sorry to hear about your DH. Have you spoken to the DWP to see if there is any other help available to you? I know it is probably hopeful, but it is worth double checking, all the same.0

Is this at all ADSA stores? Does it have to be a Lenor cap? I looked on their website but can't find anything...I am due to shop this evening, and can pop home on the way to get a cap if it is....

Hiya Valli,
Hope you don't mind me butting in to ask.... is that their usual price or was it a reduced to clear price, sounds like a great bargain, but my nearest Mr M is 5 miles away, so I'd rather not go if I won't get my bargain!

Ooh Weezl - I am so flattered you read my post - seen your challenge! It was their reduced to clear price. This was at about 7.45 on a shut at ten night so it would've been a while before it went down to 9p which is their final price. I bought these (and they are going down a treat) because I didn't pick up 4 boxes of chicken livers as Sainsbury's for 15p (also reduced to clear) each which would have fed the cat (or me) for ages - because I was being thick! And it is costing a fortune to feed the cat - more than you're spending!Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

I want to know the answer to this, too. Lights are left on - although that's improving since the 'we can pay the electricity bill OR...' lecture. Then its the 'but X has/goes/buys' and despite my reminding them I'm not X's mum I'm their mum they still compare. They are beginning to understand NO means NO though :rotfl: after over 10 years of hearing it!Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

In a site I'm on they have a great thing. Its the "a nonny mouse" fund. I wish we could do that here... when a member is going through hard times they are sent a nonnymouse package.
You can put your name on the list to be a mouse and the list "mum" writes out a rota and you all take your turn to send a wee packet. It can be tiny things, second hand things, books, wool, anything. And a lovely card . It just lets people know they are never alone and it saved my life once when I was very down.0 -

You can't watch live tv on your PC i.e. if it has a reciever built in or a PC card unless you have a licence.

Kate
Just a warning.
I've just been reading the news on the bbc site and noticed that there's a link to watch the news live. I clicked on it, and sure enough, it is live tv that I'm watching on my laptop, with no tv card.0
