I don`t agree with free school dinners for all and tv licences for all over 65. Who on earth will pay for all this, the long suffering tax payer of course
I quite agree with you Kittie....there does need to be an element of means-testing for benefit-type stuff and as for free school dinners - well....words fail me... I am not a conservative by any manner of means - but I do think people need to take an element of personal responsibility for their choices in life. Having said that....I often ponder just how the heck the Government could differentiate between those unemployed against their will and those who plan to make a career of it and be so for literally years....and not give a penny to the "careerist" ones and give twice as much to the genuine ones (as dole money was only just enough to live on last time I was unemployed - and it has been cut a heck of a lot since then and I couldnt possibly manage to do so for one).0 -
My DD just had a very snarky leaflet sent out with her student stuff (she's off to uni on 21st Sept) reminding her that it is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE (Stern tones and waggy fingers) to watch TV in Halls of residence/digs/on your PC the list goes on and on, without a licence, and it's not the first she's had...methinks there must be a lot of cash to be made out of students!!!
I admit I'd miss Radio 4 (briefly) if it went down to lack of 'funding' and also the brill BBC news website....but the telly could go tomorrow if it were down to me. BBC, ITV, SKY the whole lot!
Regards
Kate
Confused again now re watching TV on the P.C.I understood (from things I read on M.S.E.) that its perfectly okay to watch tv on your p.c. - as its not actually being broadcast at the time - but a recording of a programme that has already been watched on the t.v.?? Clarification anyone?
Think this may be one of those things like the rule that states one must have a colour tv licence even if you have a black and white t.v. - IF you have a video recorder (but not if you dont) - stated reason is: because the video recorder is capable of "receiving" colour programmes - even though, as we know, a black and white t.v. cant physically show them in colour. So black and white t.v. with no video recorder means a black and white t.v. licence is okay - but buy a video recorder and one has to buy an unnecessary colour tv licence.
So - I think its in the wording: as in presumably one has to have a t.v. licence even for p.c. viewing of t.v. programmes if there is a way one can watch them at the time they are broadcast (t.v. card methinks???) - but not if one can only watch them later (ie via IPlayer).0 -
DD-who DIDN'T have a TV-had a constant stream of letters from the TV licensing people when she was at uni. She wrote to them several times but they totally ignored the letters.0

From a BBC link:
You only need a licence if you use your computer to watch programmes at the same time as they are being shown on TV...
The TV Licensing Authority says you need a licence to watch any TV station broadcasting within the UK on your computer.
However, you are free to watch archived programmes or downloadable clips without a licence.
The story is from 2006; it's possible things have changed since then.I want to move to theory. Everything works in theory.0 -
Well....I guess the TV licencing people have a mindset that says "of course EVERYONE has a tv" - so one can probably tell them otherwise till you are blue in the face and get ignored. Guess the answer is to tell them once and if you have to tell them again send them that letter by recorded delivery (copy kept) and state in it "Come and have a look for yourself - I'm willing to PROVE to you I couldnt possibly be watching t.v.";) Having done that - then I think one should have covered oneself safely in case of further harassment - because you have that copy letter you could show in Court or whatever if they actually do something "concrete" like trying to push some sort of penalty or another onto you. Probably wise as well to keep any further letters from them - as proof of harassment for that Court or whatever.
Enough people doing that should get the message through to them and they cut out the further letters.0 -

You can't watch live tv on your PC i.e. if it has a reciever built in or a PC card unless you have a licence.

I know I dont have a P.C. card. How would I tell if my p.c. has a receiver built in? Seem to recall when I bought this one that I could have had either a standard one (as this one is) or one that was billed as some sorta Media Centre or something (cant recall the title). So presume I'm okay...0
-
I would imagine it would show up in control panel or device manager??? If you weren't aware it had one when you bought it I think it is unlikely that you do...a PC card is about £60 so you'd have paid more for a ready installed one.0

The house next door has been empty since we moved out of it 2 years ago. We've told TV licensing that no-body lives there, yet they still send letters threatening fines and saying that they're going to send round people to check up. They never do.
Bit of a contrast to 18 years ago when I split up from my ex. We'd been seperated about 3 or 4 weeks and I was still in the process of sorting out finances and bills when I had a TV license person at the door. The license had only expired a couple of weeks before and I hadn't realised. It went to court and I escaped being fined by the skin of my teeth (I'd managed to scrape the money together for the license the next day after the visit and told the court that I was a single parent on income support).0 -
"funeral fund" :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: - well as someone who is single and childless......there is literally not going to be one single penny there for a funeral fund on me....I'll make sure of it....I will be leaving a fair bit....but every single last penny is to charity.......;)
. After a lifetime of paying out extra tax because of being single and childless.....I shall thoroughly enjoy "sitting on a cloud playing my harp" watching the Government fund a paupers funeral for me...having deliberately left every last penny as I decide!!!:T
now where was that leaflet...
Here it is! Filed under V......
