  • I don`t agree with free school dinners for all and tv licences for all over 65. Who on earth will pay for all this, the long suffering tax payer of course

    I've been Money Tipped!
Asda have some quite nice bodywarmers for women, either black or dark purply for £6, not in the sale either.

I did a shop in T today. Blimey the cost of tinned tomatoes, I mean napolina ones. I should have stocked up on them last year.

I noticed that as well, the organic Napolina ones are £1.18 now at Tesco, compared to around 48p earlier this year

Costco does nice organic tinned tomatoes, £6 for 12 tins, so 50p each.
I want to move to theory. Everything works in theory.

    Heck

Tomatoes have gone up that much  .-I use quite a lot of passata for hubbies chillies, goulash soup etc in winter.. and that has gone from 25c a 500ml carton to 35c a carton.. but its a lot better than the tinned tomatoes mentioned.., I have started getting extra cartons in ready for winter as i have a feeling they are going to go up again

Im glad for all the roasted tomatoes I have been freezing over these last few weeks.. Its not often been salad weather so as my tomatoes are ready outside I have been roasting them off with olive oil and seasoning and bagging to use in pasta dishes etc come autumn/winter. They are really nice..some have got peppers, aubergines, garlic, courgettes etc in ..all from the tubs out side;) - I have 23 bags so far..and plenty more outside destined for the same treatment
I thought I had got carried away as I ended up growing 30 tomato plants :p ... but Im glad now that I did :D ..and also glad that I have been saving some more seeds to grow next year ;) might see how many more plants I can make room for next season
    :rotfl:
I would love gifts that I knew had been recycled or at least got in the sales.. my lovely mum does her shopping in the sales... but after some coaching she has finally stopped buying extras because they were cheaper in the sales...
In her mind if she would normally spend say £20 on someone and got something in the sale reduced from £20 to £5..she would think she should spend the other £15 and get them more:confused: ..Now I have convinced her that the £5 gift -"should be £20"...so the person is still receiving the same gift..it has just cost her less :T it is saving her a fortune

Right im back off to my x stitch and knitting -stops me going out spending ;) plus the x stitch is mums xmas pressy and the knitting is my 1st attempt at a patchwork blanky :j

I buy the tescos value tinned tomatoes. They're only about 20p a tin. I also get the tesco brand passata in the boxes (29p).
My home grown tomatoes haven't come to anything. There are a few (about 10!) tomatoes on the plants, but they're small and green. :(

May I be sad and join in the tinned tomato discussion? Went to Lidl this morning and found the chopped toms were 21p per tin and the plum toms 19p (Tesco are same price so don't rush there!) My point is I bought the plum toms and chopped them in the tin with a per of scissors!!!!!!!!

Went to Lidl for first time to get fruit and veg and basics (sugar, eggs etc) and am going to alternate each week between there and Tescos. Saved about £3 which isn't a lot but thats about £150 a year.:T

I'm with you spandles...I'd not consider spending more than 19p on a tin of toms....I cut them in the pan with a sharp knife against the wooden spoon. If It's not tomatoey enough I add a dollop of puree. (I get a BIG tin in the local turkish shop for under a £1 usually and freeze what I can't use straight away. It cuts off the block frozen no probs. with a sharp knife)

I still don't think Lidl's cleaning stuff is as cheap as Sainsb. or Tesco's basics/savers ranges (although has anyone else noticed neither of them have had any 19p washing up liquid for about two months??)

Tomorrow I'm going on an expedition to Asda with my Elder DD...it's quite a trek in the car, but I went into my mum's local branch a couple of weeks ago, and I thought it was MUCH cheaper than Sainsburys. A loaf of hovis Granary is £1.49 in Sainsb..Asda had the same loaf for £1! Four loaves a week X 1 month - that's a nearly £8 back in your pocket! DD has been out of work since she finished uni, so she's looking to save her BF as much housekeeping has she can! I didn't check out the cleaning stuff when I went with my mum, as she was trying to buy me a trolley load of stuff, and I was trying to stop her  She's 72 and still working two days a week!

I do think alternating the supermarkets is the way forward though... I didn't find Lidl had the 'reduced' bargains, but they are certainly cheaper for the yummy things like a chorizo sausage, that help to keep a budget cooking interesting.

The Lidl tinned toms are much nicer than the Value / Smart Price ones. They are much better quality - the juice in the supermarket range tins is usually quite watery, but the Lidl ones have really thick juice.

Our tesco hasn't had it either which is VERY annoying as I end up buying more expensive WUL - ok for washing up but not when I use it on the chicken house

Anyone else seen the "weekender" bread at Tesco? It is like "tiger bread" but 1200g for £1 rather than 800g for £1.09! Only the large tesco does it which is a bit of a trek and I can't see it online... but I think if I bulk buy it is worth a once in a while trek to get it!

Have loads of wool and am currently trying to make my many offspring agree that home knitted gifts will be fun

and also like the idea of all giving each other a gift from our own home,a kind or recycling , [not things won in school fete.:p or tombola.:o ] as I heard some South African families do now a days.

Biggest problem at mo is how to get the three cats [ all rescued] to eat less fussily

I loved your post Madmerrywoman... I've been trying to think of a suitable christmas theme for me as we are going to be skint as per usual at Christmas...I'm going to KNIT something for everone....something silly...sorted! There are some great patterns for free on the internet, I downloaded a Dutch ladies knitted mouse pattern yesterday, and while looking saw knitted cupcakes and all sorts...I've a supply of yarn in the house!

I don't hesitate to regift :D whatever the source...but I've heard of the gifting that you mention, It's giving something like a vase that your friend has always admired to her, or passing on an heirloom early isn't it?

I've also got two recycled pets :rotfl: only mine are dogs and only one of them is fussy. I've had a quiet word in her ear and told her that if she wants the quality chews to continue, she has to agree to eat own brand pet food a couple of days a week. We struck a deal - those chews are yummy.

Actually my OH cuts them in half lengthways with a pair of metal snips to double the quantity. (they are the hi life rawhide chews at about £3.20 a tub of 12 - they are the only brand that last more than 60 seconds - my dogs are staffies and have strong teeth!) I garnish Miss Matties dinner if she turns her nose up with a bit of human food, or a sprinkle of ham, or even a little squeeze of tomato sauce...sometimes works ;)

    Regards
