Well I did an experiment today with the washing machine.
Sorted all of the clothes into batches, as you do, whites, darks etc.
I put in a batch of coloured that weren't stained, set to 30mins daily wash setting, 600 spin (which is the minimum on mine unless you do non spin that is) as it was quite breezy so I could get them quite dry on the washing line and set to a cold wash.
I wasn't sure if the powder would dissolve properly on cold but gave it a go.
Put some conditioner in too to give it extra smell just in case you don't get much on a 30 min cycle.
Anyway, I checked the meter and it worked out at less than half of a unit, to do the wash on this cold setting.0 -
I am shocked. DW is finished and these are the accurate costings for a 50 degree was for a full load
13.5 pence energy
15 pence detergent
4 pence for 30 litres water
total is 32.5 pence per load
I did one load almost every evening.
Just taking energy and detergent that is £26 a quarter and just the energy is £12.28 a quarter
Out of interest I looked up how much it would cost you in a launderette.
from http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080130075336AADsq3aMy laundrette in South London
£7-£10 service wash (depending on amount and per bag)
£4 big machine
£3 smaller machine
Dryer seems to be 20p/5 mins
Puts in into perspective a bit doesn't it?0 -

One thing I'm making a real effort to do is to unplug the broadband when I'm not using it.
Am I being very dim, but what benefit does that give you? We pay a monthly amount for our Broadband and it makes no difference what we do during the month with itPiglet

i take it they mean the modem is on all the time unless you switch it off so it will be using power even if you are not online.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

I have just figured out that my Lidl DW tablet costs almost €0.1, have tried half tab but water is quite hard and most things don't wash properly...need one of those gadgets to check what different appliances cost, my fridge freezer is on its last legs, but am hanging on to get new one when I get my new kitchen sometime between now and Christmas...I'm sure that it is costing me a mint...currently my electricity is costing about €75 per month, that is for all cooking, double oven, fridge freezer, undercounter fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, water pump, lights, 3 tvs, dvd player, iron (seldom used), microwave, hairdryer,pc and printer, various chargers, George Foreman grill, toaster, rice cooker, coffee machine and electric kettle....not sure where I can cut down without knowing what uses what.
Making draught excluders at the moment, stuffing with old tights and socks....getting rid of the odd sock pile in the process. Am also getting organised to put another layer of lining on curtains to keep out the winter when it hits...as I would normally use 3 fills of oil during the year...my last fill cost €810, so can't do that this year.
Good luck to all and keep the tips coming

If my OH continues to insist on his daily bath at 96p a time, I think I'm going to have to double-use his bathwater to soak all my laundry. Am sure that the Radox he piles in will generate enough cleansing effect to wash away the dirt and then I can simply let it drip dry in the garden (at least until winter arrives).0

Filling a bath (gas boiler)
Energy usage: 4.71kWh 1995 price: 10.29p July 2008 price: 14.48p Now: 18.82p
Interesting figures for other appliances etc.0 -
Do any of you ladies know how much my broadband modem costs to run ? I don't want to unplug it unless I really have to, because I'm scared it starts acting up. Are you supposed to leave them on or off ?0
-
I don't know how much the modem costs to run, I hope it's almost negligible, but I stopped unplugging mine because I had terrible problems trying to get it to connect the next day.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0
