I am shocked. DW is finished and these are the accurate costings for a 50 degree was for a full load
13.5 pence energy
15 pence detergent
4 pence for 30 litres water
total is 32.5 pence per load
I did one load almost every evening.
Just taking energy and detergent that is £26 a quarter and just the energy is £12.28 a quarter
gordon bennett!! I`m going to be very selective about using the dw from now on
I priced the energy for a pot of tea for 2 and it is under 1p
I discovered similar things with our dishwasher. On economy seven however, it is about 4.5pence for the full load at hotest temperature and I use 2 heaped tea spoons of laundry detergent for the powder. Its on every 2 days with everyone home and every 4 days with just oh and me home.0 -
I can`t measure the fridge as I can`t fit the meter in, oh well it is on the most economical setting anyway and I need it on as it is just a fridge/freezer but I was curious. The meter is now set up as I am charging up my bike battery. I get a good 52 miles out of 1 charge and I have done 160 miles the last two weeks that I would never have done. lol and I have got the mail dvd every day, going 6 miles return, on my bike. I am storing all the dvd`s ready for cold winter weekends when I will snuggle up in a warm fleece. Ahh the joys of coping
My solar water is quite warm again this afternoon so I am cooking food to eat at 5 before the bag of water cools down too much. I did all todays dishes so far in this morning`s solar water. It is really satisfying this way but no way would I pay thousands to get one put on the roof as it would not pay its way. 12 days at this rate and I will have paid for the bag as long as I don`t use the dw
By the way tesco`s washing up liquid is now 55p and I bought one last month at 44p. It works very well and is quite concentrated so is very economical0 -
The quick answer is no, the voltage will be completely wrong for a start
Solio, from the web site, is 3 volts
http://www.solio.com/charger/explore-solio/tech-spec.html
Any and all domestic UK appliances are 240 volts
Solio max wattage is 6 watts [3volts x 2 amps, Ohm's law]
The electric light bulb analogy refers to 100w bulb, maybe 40w on low
I seem to recall a sunshine driven cooker, but this was for use in places like Uganda / Egypt etc as it focused the suns rays, like a magnifying glass
You will find it very difficult to but a new slow cooker that will use the same power as a light bulb. It is true that when they first came out about 30years ago, they were only about 60w or slightly higher, but new ones are more like 180watt or higher, but they do cook a bit quicker.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -

I can't believe that the cost of the tablet is more than the cost of electric. I only pay 5p per tablet, split then in half and use the machine on a half load, unless there's a lot of really greasy stuff, then I still use 1/2 a tablet, but let the machine run for the full load.
Kittie when you do these power costings, how much are you paying per kwh for your leccy?
Edit; I forgot to say my dishes do still come out lovely and clean (when properly stacked).Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -
One thing I'm making a real effort to do is to unplug the broadband when I'm not using it.
We've also really cut back on our shopping, only visiting the supermarket once every 2-3 weeks now. We're raiding the freezer a lot more and having simpler meals like boiled eggs.Comping, Clicking & Saving for Change0 -
I am basically looking at £12.28 a quarter and seeing if I can shave that. I think I am on a personal mission!!
I am with ebico and all their electricity in s wales is 12.72p a kwh
I probably got the dw tablets on a bogoff or somesuch but I got the latest price from the tesco website, so what I quoted was the worse case scenario for the tablet that I used0 -

I've been wondering that today too! We have a 29 minute 40 deg cycle that I tend to use, but OH has been talking up the 30 deg cycle. Timed it this morning and it took 1 hour 45 minutes! I find it hard to believe this would save electric or water, but these are crazy crazy times!
Kittie - are you available for hire? Come and stay with your magic gadget and work out all my costings in return for free food (and heating, of course!).On a mission.0 -
I'm not the only one to wonder about the viability of the "eco" programmes on the washing machine, then! My daughter, being helpful, put the sheets on a cold cottons wash, not too bad, but then she used another "eco" programme .... 3 HOURS it took!!!
Does make me wonder...If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!0 -
