I'm a bit of a foodie too (hence the weight gain :o ) and I have copied what my parents do which is read cookery books and magazine articles for inspiration.
Then I choose one meal/dish a week at least that I'll be looking forward to, and that's where I start my meal plan. For eg this week I had a recipe I wanted to do which needed a couple of sticks of celery. So this weeks batch of soup (lunches) is celery soup. :o

I'm not as organised as you Olive, but I sort of do the same, just in a more fly by night fashion. I choose a meal for example butternut and spinach risotto and make sure that two days lunches are salads using up the raw spinach. Incidentally, the butternut squash, when roasted is amazing in a salad with black olives, pine nuts and goats cheese on a bed of raw spinach.

As I eat shreddies at my desk (the cereal not the pants you understand)

I am drooling. Love butternut squash etc and that salad sounds great.

I am trying - without much success - to try and think about what veggies we might need this year - the idea of planning the basics for this I am hoping will then make me be able to plan meals more successfully.

Olive love the recipe book idea - not that I normally follow recipies really - but like the idea of getting to grips with cooking from recipes:)

However as I have only meal planned for 3 days so far - the idea of being able to totally figure out what I really need to grow to plan (vaguely) for the year is a task and a half.

However as I don't ever do things in moderation (hence the weight gain here too) I am about to roll up my sleeves.

I know the basic veggies we like (trying to grow butternut squash this year too) and I have a basic year planner from someone on here for veggie garden (thank you will look up kind lady name later).

I like the ideas of planning something nice and working dishes around that - I love to cook - be glad truth be told when lodger boy goes cos our food has got very predictable cos he doesn't eat any veggies (except tatties and carrots) and very expensive because he DOES eat puddings and I don't normally cook them.

Ho - hum - ta for the tips.

    Saddo confession time.....

I have a Word document with a list of meals about 50 of them. I look at the list on Friday - at work :o click and drag chosen meals to new page, work out which ones can be doubled up for freezer, adapted for 2nd meal, print off the page - work is so good to me...Then do the list from there

Attached to the list are the recipes , where necessary. I'm always adding to the list and now remember to add the recipe, didn't always do this :o

recipe for biere a la zizi (or drink of revenge :D  )

not that you'll believe me but this wasn't my idea (my former flatmates), basically what bodily fluid is same colour as beer? Mix together (if you want to be really evil you can add a few other things but even though she tried to encourage me I couldn't), and serve............and yes he drank it and no I didn't tell him.

    Revenge is sweet :p

    I'm a good girl really :A promise!............just don't like liars.

    Hi,:hello:

I am fairly new  to this site and somehow, today, got side tracked to Fay's diary:wink: , which has added some sparkles to my day, but then got intrigued when you mentionned a certain recipe, and having found the item, you got me laughing to the point of tears :rotfl: :rotfl: . I just wish i would of thought of that one to serve up to my ex, the lying, spending, cheating "towrag", oh bless his heart but only with daggers, loads of them.

    Keep up the good work

Wow Piq, that sounds like a really good idea, wish I was that organised....I always think about meal planning but apart from a vague -soup on Saturday lunchtimes - baked beans on toast one night, it's all a case of what can I be !!!!!d to rustle up when we get home and DD's clamouring for chow and I'm tired.

Should try and do a meal plan using up the dented tins in the cupboards, have soooo many!

:o:o It's not really organised, it takes moments, honestly! Just list your favourite meals and add new things when you see recipes and ideas. The OS board is great for ideas. Before I did this, I tended to have the same things all the time, I was sooo bored, I'd order a takeaway or two :o You know how that happens....

Also do double or triple portions (slow cooker) and freeze, ready for when you can't face cooking or have no money left at the end of the month!!

    I am definately NOT WORTHY!!!!!!!!!!!

I takes me enough time to tie my boots in the morning.

    You are a marvel.

I will of course blatantly steal this idea but always give you the recognition you deserve.

  Just had my phd meeting - guess what they now want LESS DETAIL and less writing and less information - so pleased I have spent the last month writing something 5000 words long - now they think they want less:mad:

Same as Unix said really - Hi

Watch you they are a pretty improvising, no nonsense, sparkly, resiliant bunch in the DFW threads!!!!!!! :) welcome

And my motto is don't get cross get even - doing it retrospecitively isnt a bad thing either.

If you ever see said toe-rag - lick the spoon the next time before you make him a cuppa

Or use his toothbrush to clean the toilet if you have access to it - just for old times sake.
